Job overview

The Microbiology department at Princess Alexandra Hospital is seeking to recruit a Specialist Biomedical Scientist to join the team on a full-time, permanent basis. We welcome applications from all who are interested, either from within the UK or overseas! To be eligible for this post you must be a qualified HCPC state registered Biomedical Scientist with a minimum of 3 years post-registration experience.

We typically processes 270,000 samples per year including a serology section, which is partly integrated with the Biochemistry department for the use of the Abbott Alinity analysers. The laboratory is also equipped with a BacTalert 3D, Autoscan, Bruker Maldi-tof, IQ 200 automated urine microscopy analyser, Mast Urisystem, VIDAS serology analyser and Aus Diagnostics for molecular testing. The laboratory is ISO 15189 UKAS accredited.

Main duties of the job

You will be responsible for the diagnosis of infectious diseases by the application of microbiological, serological and molecular technology using microscopy, culture, rapid identification techniques and antigen/antibody-complex and nucleic acid detection methods.

Diagnostic work includes examination of urine, faeces, sputum, cerebrospinal fluid, swabs of infected sites, pus, tissue, aspirated and drained fluids, and blood/serum. Specimens for molecular testing of covid samples and serology is also required.

Good organisational and communication skills will be required along with up-to-date knowledge of microbiology. You should have enthusiasm and have the ability to work both autonomously or as part of a team.  As a senior member of the team you will also be responsible to train our junior members and play supportive role to the Senior BMSs.  You will be responsible for maintaining a high standard of professional expertise and quality.

You will be encouraged to maintain professional and personal development and will be expected to participate in a single disciplinary on-call service when appropriate.
