Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen in the radiotherapy treatment department at Colchester Hospital for a Treatment Specialist Radiographer.

Applications are invited from suitably experienced Therapeutic Radiographers, who share our vision of providing state of the art treatment, delivered by caring and supportive professionals.

ESNEFT currently has:

  • 1 Varian Ethos, 1 Varian Halcyon, 5 Varian TrueBeam Linear Accelerators, two with 6 degrees of freedom couch. ARIA R&V system and Eclipse treatment planning system
  • Orthovoltage Units with a range of energies
  • Philips & Siemens CT Scanners. 4DCT scans are completed for lung patients and DIBH scans for left sided breast patients
  • MR Treatment planning
  • Mould room and planning services are radiographer led
  • Macmillan Radiographers are key workers for major tumour sites, and provide psychological support for patients and their carers
  • The department is accredited to ISO 9001:2015, and uses QPulse as the document management system

You will work in all areas of the Radiotherapy department ensuring the highest quality of technical practice, patient care and ensuring targets are achieved. You will work closely with the leadership team for treatment in the radiotherapy department.

You will also participate in the training and mentoring of our undergraduate therapeutic radiography students.

Cross site working to our Ipswich Hospital may be required.

Main duties of the job

  • To work closely with the Band 8A operational lead to ensure the workload is managed to minimise waiting times and staff work efficiently and effectively as a team
  • Daily planning and organisation of treatment units, to ensure activities are prioritised appropriately. Investigating and mitigating breaches where possible, escalating patient pathways where necessary
  • Supervise and participate in all aspects of clinical work related to the preparation, delivery and verification of Radiotherapy to maintain the highest professional and technical standards of Radiotherapy and patient care, liaising with the multi-disciplinary team to troubleshoot and resolve issues
  • Review and update Risk assessments and ensure appropriate documentation is in place to facilitate safe working practices in line with current legislation, and propose and implement changes
  • Actively participate in the Quality System and other quality initiatives within the directorate and profession to develop, implement and evaluate practice and techniques
  • Undertake appraisal and development of a personal development plan for junior radiographers in the department
  • Perform other duties, delegated by the Radiotherapy Service Manager, or deputy, after consultation with the post holder, to meet the needs of the department
  • Be prepared to vary working hours as may be necessary to meet the demands of the Department
  • Be prepared to work at either Radiotherapy Department site within ESNEFT, should the need arise

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • State registered Radiographer
  • Post Graduate Image competency
  • Post Graduate Masters, or equivalent, level education relevant to role.
Desirable criteria
  • MSc
  • PGCT
  • Counselling

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Highly developed specialist Knowledge underpinned by theory and experience,
  • Awareness of new/current technical developments and issues, both clinical and professional
  • Knowledge of relevant standards and current initiatives.
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of QI process

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant Clinical experience in all areas of Radiotherapy
  • Management of complex pathways and gaps in treatment.
  • All aspects of treatment planning/delivery/patient management
  • A wide range of techniques, complexities, equipment and clinical experience
  • Image Guided Radiotherapy
  • Dealing with people with varying physical & psychological capabilities & in complex situations
  • Knowledge of relevant standards and current initiatives.
  • Evidence of CPD
