Job overview

Are you looking for a career in the NHS and the chance to develop? Are you passionate about making a difference for our patients?

Due to recent investment and expansion of the general surgery team, an amazing opportunity has arisen for you to join us as a highly motivated Support Secretary at Colchester Hospital. This is a key role in the department and you will be a highly valued member of the team.

We are looking for a dynamic, flexible and enthusiastic team player to integrate with the current team and provide an efficient and effective support service to the clinicians, patients & medical secretaries. The ideal candidate will have attention to detail, have excellent communication skills and the ability to prioritise and plan. You must be able to work using your own initiative and be flexible to work where the need is greatest.

We have a fixed term post until 31st March 2025 available.

This is the ideal post if you are looking to take the next step in your career to become a medical secretary.

Main duties of the job

As a Support Secretary you will play an integral part in patients receiving their surgical treatment including cancer treatments. You will ensure their journey runs smoothly which helps reduce waiting times.

As part of your role you will liaise with multiple teams within the trust, including radiology, pre-assessment and the theatre department.

Working closely with the secretarial team and consultant body you will be responsible for booking a patient for their surgery and booking outpatient pre-operative assessments. You will ensure your consultants’ theatre lists are scheduled, prioritised due to clinical urgency and are fully utilised.

Other duties include typing patient letters and notes as dictated by the team and audit dictations.  You will deal with queries from patients and book appointments. You will also assist the team with other admin tasks.

Working for our organisation

We are ESNEFT and we provide hospital and community health services to almost one million people across east Suffolk and north Essex. Our dedicated staff deliver care from acute hospitals in Colchester and Ipswich, community hospitals, surgeries, community clinics and in patients’ own homes.

We are one of the largest NHS organisations in England, employing more than 12,000 staff.
