Are you an enthusiastic person interested in laboratory work? We are looking for Medical laboratory assistants in  department to join our busy, Haematology and Transfusion team in Chelmsford.

In accordance with agreed protocols and standard operational procedures, you will participate in the analysis of biological samples by receiving, preparing and processing samples under the supervision of Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered staff. This includes clerical input of patient and test details into the laboratory computer system and performing required supportive duties, for example preparation of reagents, administrative and clerical tasks, and maintenance of equipment.

Main duties of the job

The role of a Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) is essential for the laboratory to provide a safe and efficient service by providing support to qualified Biomedical Scientists. An MLA working in the laboratory will perform duties such as receiving samples into the department, registering them onto the computer system, preparing the samples for analysis, performing some maintenance tasks on laboratory equipment, loading samples onto analysers, filing and retrieval of samples, preparing reagents, collecting data, answering queries and general housekeeping and administrative tasks, maintaining critical blood stock levels, blood transfusion admin tasks, and assisting biomedical scientists across departments.

To assist with clerical duties within haematology and blood transfusion. To perform routine MLA duties such as temperature checks across the department, assist biomedical scientists in a range of ways such as running, loading, unloading and troubleshooting clinical analysers, maintaining critical blood stock levels in transfusion. 

Report all accidents, incidents or near misses, dangerous situations according to the Departmental and Trusts risk events procedure.

To ensure a safe environment by maintaining adequate levels of safety and security within the laboratory according to the Department, Directorate and  policies and procedures.

  • 5 GCSEs or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • To have demonstrable experience working in a laboratory setting

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Previous experience working within haematology/Transfusion
