Allergy Consultant

Consultant

Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust is now one of the largest trusts in the country, serving a population of 1.2 million people. Our newly formed Trust, comprising acute hospital sites at Broomfield in Chelmsford, Basildon and Southend,  is determined to provide the best health services for its local population. We are a well-led, high-performing and innovative organisation working in the best interests of the people we serve.

Job overview

This exciting new post in Adult Allergy will involve the postholder working alongside the existing team Steve Jenkins (Respiratory Consultant) and Kathryn Powrie (Allergy nurse specialist). The Allergy service at Broomfield has developed over time and now takes referrals from a catchment area of 1.2 million across Mid and South Essex.

It is hoped that the expanded capacity as a result of this new post will allow the team to take referrals from a wider catchment area. The team offers a wide range of services including subcutaneous and sublingual immunotherapy, food and drug challenge testing, and biologic administration for urticaria and severe asthma.

The allergy department at Broomfield in is the process of applying for registration with the IQAS (Improving Quality in Allergy Services). There is a strong focus on governance, patient safety and patient experience. The allergy team sits within the wider department of Respiratory medicine which provides mutual and administrative support.

Broomfield hospital is a regional centre for plastic surgery, upper GI surgery and ENT. It has always had a reputation as an exciting and engaging place to work, with enthusiastic clinicians focussed on the needs of patients and working together in a supportive environment.

The Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust also includes Basildon and Southend hospitals, and offers not only a large catchment are but also opportunities for economies of scale and pathway development.

Please note: this Job Description is pending Royal College approval.

Main duties of the job

This is a full time post with no on call commitments. A detailed timetable can be seen in the job description. This would involve four allergy clinics per week, plus two challenge session, with further clinical time for inpatient referrals and  triage of GP referrals.

Currently there are two whole time equivalent allergy nurse specialists working within the team. There are no medical allergy trainees working in the department, although this would be a future aspiration.

The postholder would be encouraged to develop new services and special interests, such as transition clinics, liaison with Acute Medicine, and joint clinics with ENT, anaesthetic assessment, and Dermatology.

Currently the Broomfield allergy team networks within Eastern region, predominantly with Addenbrooke’s allergy team, with quarterly meetings. The postholder has the opportunity to spend non-clinical sessions at Addenbrooke’s for development and CME.
