Department Leader - STORM Mid

Band 7

Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust is now one of the largest trusts in the country, serving a population of 1.2 million people. Our newly formed Trust, comprising acute hospital sites at Broomfield in Chelmsford, Basildon and Southend,  is determined to provide the best health services for its local population. We are a well-led, high-performing and innovative organisation working in the best interests of the people we serve.

Job overview

We are looking for an experienced Orthopaedic Practitioner with strong leadership skills to provide managerial responsibility for our high quality pre-operative assessment and STORM outreach Team. Utilising extensive knowledge of clinical governance and staff leadership, you will work alongside the current Orthopaedic Team to ensure a cohesive, dynamic leadership team.

We provide pre-operative education and preparation to patients undergoing Elective Joint Replacement Surgery and with our exciting new pathway we are instrumental in ensuring that joint replacement patients are fully prepared for their surgery and work toward Same Day Discharge.

We also provide a high quality outreach service to patients who have experienced a variety of both elective and trauma orthopaedic conditions.

As the STORM Team Leader you will be responsible for maintaining our high quality service including Orthopaedic Pre-Assessment across two sites.

Our Orthopaedic Pre-Assessment is a fast developing service supported by consultant anaesthetists. We provide adult pre-operative assessments for patients undergoing operations under general anaesthetic, spinal anaesthetic and regional block for Orthopaedic surgery.

This is an exciting time within Orthopaedics to input into the pre-screening, risk assessment and optimisation workflows to support efficiency of the service to safely keep pace with the Trust's elective recovery programme.

Main duties of the job

As well as having significant experience in pre-operative assessment and the management of Orthopaedic patients, the Department Leader will be required to demonstrate the knowledge and skills to develop our pre-operative assessment service in addition to our peri-operative preparation and outreach service (STORM). Our dedicated teams drive innovation with recent advances in same day discharge for total hip & knee replacement patients.

You will demonstrate knowledge and skill in management of people, quality improvement and change management. You will be an effective role model demonstrating high levels of clinical competence and expertise. You will provide proactive coordination of the units cross site and excellent communication with all members of the team.

Whilst this is a Nurse-Led service we welcome applications from Allied Health Professionals with relevant experience and qualifications.

Working for our organisation

With a workforce of approximately 15,000 staff, we can now do more and go further in delivering health services to our local communities.

Our ambition is to deliver excellent local and specialist services, to improve the health and wellbeing of our patients, and provide a vibrant place for staff to develop, innovate and build careers.

Patients will experience improved care as well as fewer delays and cancellations.  We are able to provide more once-in-a-lifetime specialist care region-wide. With our new trust size will come more opportunities for development, research, networking and innovation.

We aim to make the most of our skills and experiences so we can become the best we can be. As one organisation we will recruit the finest and retain more specialist staff due to more employment opportunities across our Trust.
