Job overview

Working as part of the Children’s Outpatients Nursing team, this role focuses on the provision of direct care to children and their families in an outpatient environment.

You will work with children and young people with different health and social care needs.

You will also be an advocate for children and their families, promoting child focused, family centred care and provide effective liaison with the multi-disciplinary team and other professional colleagues and agencies involved within the child’s care.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide and maintain effective communication between parents/carers and staff at all levels, giving information that is appropriate to the age of the child/young persons.
  • Act as advocate for the child/young person when dealing with other health care professionals.
  • Act as co-ordinator between various health care professionals.
  • Liaise with all relevant health care professionals, both in the hospital and community setting, particularly with regard to non-attenders and Safeguarding issues.
  • Identify patients who were not brought to their appointments and discuss with Consultant Paediatricians.
  • Ensure that the views of all patients and their families are acted upon, including the resolution of complaints in accordance with Trust policy.
  • Provide advice, support and appropriate education to 
    patients/carers and their families.
  • Provide appropriate health education materials, information on appropriate associations and help centres to patients, families and health care professionals.
  • Maintain links with organisations providing support and information to patients/carers.
  • Use of near patient testing equipment for recording HbA1C levels.
  • Provide phlebotomy services, for children of all ages attending the department.
  • Provide ECG recording, for children of all ages attending the department.
