Job overview
Through strong leadership and effective management, the matron will support the ward and departmental senior sisters/senior charge nurses to promote and deliver excellence in nursing and midwifery care maintaining and continually improve clinical standards evidenced by achievement of key quality performance indicators.
The matron’s key responsibility is to ensure that the patient experience is of the highest quality inspiring patient and public confidence. This will be achieved through high visibility, accessibility, and surveillance.
You will ensure that all patients are treated with compassion, dignity and respect placing value on the diversity of the local community and beyond. He/she will promote best practice in the prevention of infection through ensuring a clean and safe environment
To have a local open and transparent communication channel that support the ward team to do the right thing for people we care for, to be bold when they have good ideas and to speak up when things go wrong to ensure learning and quality improvement.
To oversee the delivery of high quality, safe and effective nursing or midwifery care focused on improving outcomes and experiences for patients, families and carers and effectively managing risk.
Main duties of the job
Effective communication between the post holder, colleagues, line manager and staff they manage.
Analytical and Planning - support Head of Midwifery on professional maternity issues and provide leadership for staff groups.
Work actively with staff in clinical environment to champion good practice and identify invidual development needs. To lead midwives through coaching and modelling, toward the achievement of expected standards of practice.
Ensure effective risk management systems are in place within the ward areas and contribute to service strategies to manage risk. Ensure there is a culture of learning through incidents, complaints and claims.
Effectively manage allocated pay and non-pay budgets, and to produce routine monitoring reports. Be accountable to the Head of Midwifery for ensuring all services and financial budgets are efficiently managed.
Directly manage ward managers and through this staff group ensure all members of the ward team are managed in accordance with trust policy, procedure, and best practice. Oversee recruitment, retention and attendance of all staff ensuring a co-ordinated approrach across the directorate.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registered Midwife / Current NMC Registration
- BSc in Midwifery
- Mentorship / Practice Assessor
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of on-going education
- Evidence of Quality Improvement
Experience and knowledge
Essential criteria
- At least two years experience as a band 7 midwife
- Previous management experience
- Experience in normal and abnormal obstetrics
Desirable criteria
- Experience in both hospital and community
- Practice underpinned by research -based evidence and theory
