Job overview

The post will be ideally suited to a senior neurosurgical trainee at the end of their training or Post CCT trainee wishing to undertake a sub-speciality fellowship. The post is not suitable for more junior candidates.

The fellowship is designed to cover all aspects of subspecialty training in vascular neurosurgery in and in skull base surgery. The two subspecialties offer a consultant led service and the management plans are decided through dedicated subspecialty MDT’s for both neurovascular and skull base subspecialties and consultant led subspecialty ward rounds.

There is strong collaborative work in between neurosurgeons and Interventional Neuro-Radiology team as well as with Maxillofacial and ENT team.

The successful applicant is expected as well to participate in the Departmental On-Call Service at registrar level. Both full or part time applicants are welcomed.

The Neurosurgical Department provides a regional elective and acute service across both sites of the Trust. This is led by 12 substantive Consultant Neurosurgeons and 1 substantive Orthopaedic Spinal Surgeon in the department, all with a strong culture of team work and support for all level colleagues.

The Fellow will be expected to provide neurosurgical on call cover at registrar level on 1 in 12 full shift rota at the Hull Royal Infirmary site. Due to training needs of the registrars within the department, the post holder will have the opportunity to train junior registrars in selected cases as well.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be exposed to all aspects of neuro-vascular surgery (excluding paediatrics) along with Skull base surgery and would be expected to take the lead in running the neurovascular firm as much as the on call rota allows. This is an excellent opportunity to work in a unit with 3 skull base surgeons carrying out anterior (including endoscopic) and lateral skull base work.

The post holder will be expected to:

1. Participate in surgery and daily ward follow up for vascular and skull base tumour cases. Active participation in the ward round for the two subspecialties cases and as part of the registrar rota. 2. Attend weekly Neuro-vascular MDTs and clinics and take the lead in liaising with interventional neuroradiology team regarding management of the neurovascular patients. 3. Attend alternate week Skull Base MDTs and clinics 4. There might be general neurosurgery clinics that will need cover as part of on registrar rota. 5. Participate in ongoing audit in relation to vascular and skull base cases, active involvement in the departmental teaching and publish in a subspecialty journal.  6. Participate in the neurosurgical department registrar rota including out of hours  7. There is opportunity to attend neurovascular radiology theatres

Professional Registration

Essential criteria
  • Full Registration with the GMC

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • The applicant must have achieved a primary medical qualification as recognised by the General Medical Council. Must also Have MRCS qualification or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • FRCS(SN) completed.

Clinical Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • The applicant must be familiar with and be able to demonstrate an understanding and experience of the major principles of Medical Practice (2012) Clinical experience ST5 level or above
Desirable criteria
  • Able to carry out majority of Emergency neurosurgical Procedures independently.

Language skills

Essential criteria
  • All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written & spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues
  • Demonstrable by either having Undertaken undergraduate medical training in English or can provide supporting evidence of language skills

Experience & Attributes

  • Experience in UK Hospitals (Minimum of 6 months)
