- To provide consultant cover and overnight on-call (1:10 weekdays & weekends) for the Neonatal Service, To provide supervision to the Neonatal Unit, postnatal wards and Transitional Care in Hull Women’s and Children’s Hospital. To contribute to the tertiary neonatal unit advice service to Level 1 and 2 services in the Humber & North Yorkshire units through the Embrace referral and transport service.
To support trainees in induction, teaching and training and to act as clinical and educational supervisor. To provide outpatient clinics by telephone/ video and face to face for GP referrals under the age of 1 year and for neonatal patients after discharge To work with the Neonatal team for quality improvement, service development and national strategies for neonatal critical care.
Main duties of the job
A standard full time Job Plan will contain 10 programmed activities (PAs) comprising 7.5 PAs for direct clinical care (DCC) and 2.5 for supporting activities (SPAs). LTFT applications are also encouraged.This will comprise of a rolling cycle of 10 weeks as part of a 1 in 10 on-call rota. The timetable will include 2 hot weeks of 1 full week of intensive care, 1 week of special care and transitional care cover (can be split over 2 week period depending on candidate preference) and 7 additional weeks of clinic work/additional ward cover/teaching/ educational supervision based on 3-4 days where the majority of SPA time can also be taken.
1.5 SPAs are classed as ‘core’ and cover time for training, teaching, CPD, audit, appraisal, clinical governance and attendance at service meetings. There are opportunities to participate in undergraduate teaching within the HYMS medical school curriculum. Additional SPA time can be allocated for research, clinical management and educational supervisor (ES) activity. It is envisaged that this post would include the educational supervision of at least one trainee per year.

Professional Registration
Essential criteria
- Entry on the GMC specialist register in Paediatrics (Neonatal medicine) or eligibility to enter it within 6 months from the time of the interview and hold a license to practice.
- For candidates wishing to be considered for a locum post, entry on the GMC specialist register in Paediatrics and can supply comprehensive evidence of equivalent training in neonatal medicine to fulfill syllabus/competency requirements as published by the RCPCH as above and hold a license to practice.
Qualifications and Training
Essential criteria
- MB ChB or Equivalent MRCPCH
- Training and experience already approved to qualify for the specialist register through subspecialty training or CSAR for CCT
- Applicants with training experience of at least 30 months at Level 3 (HST) in UK neonatal medicine but not meeting the full criteria are encouraged to apply and will be considered for a locum post
Desirable criteria
- Neonatal subspecialty Training for CCT Paediatrics (Neonatal Medicine)
- Postgraduate degree: e.g. MD, PhD
- Postgraduate qualification in Education or significant experience in post graduate training
Clinical Experience
Essential criteria
- Evidence of thorough and broad training in neonatal medicine
- Knowledge, advanced skills and extensive experience of neonatal medicine
- Extensive experience in a UK NICU
- Evidence of ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of emergency and routine problems in neonatal medicine
- Evidence of the ability to take full and independent responsibility for delivering a neonatal intensive care service without direct supervision
- NLS provider course
- Knowledge and experience of safe-guarding children and vulnerable adults.
Desirable criteria
- Previous consultant level experience
- Attendance at national and regional specialty meetings
- Experience of neurodisability in the context of neonatal follow up
- Experience of transporting sick neonates
- Training in echocardiography skills and evidence of recent practical experience of basic functional and structural echocardiographic assessment of newborn infants.
Management and Administration Experience
Essential criteria
- Evidence of management experience or training
- Evidence of the ability to manage and lead a team
- Ability to organise, prioritise and manage high intensity workload
Desirable criteria
- Ability to develop, present and operationalise coherent ideas for service development/ delivery
Teaching, Audit and Research
Essential criteria
- Experience of supervising junior medical staff
- Commitment to formal and informal teaching of medical staff, AHPs and medical students
- Evidence of having conducted a practice-changing audit
- Evidence of understanding of research methodology in context of neonatal medicine
- Evidence of involvement in research
Desirable criteria
- NLS instructor
- Evidence of regular recent input into regional teaching programmes
- Experience facilitating simulation training
- Attendance at a teaching course
- Interest in medical education evidenced by attendance at appropriate meetings or involvement in developing postgraduate education
- Recent published clinical research in a peer reviewed journal
- Experience of participating in multi-centre research projects
