Our centre for trauma services and obstetrics is at Conquest Hospital, while our centre for urology and stroke services is at Eastbourne DGH. At Bexhill Hospital we offer a range of outpatient, day surgery, rehabilitation and intermediate care services. At Rye, Winchelsea and District Memorial Hospital we offer outpatients, rehabilitation and intermediate services. At Uckfield Community Hospital we provide day surgery and outpatient care.

In the community, we deliver services that focus on people with long term conditions living well outside hospital, through our integrated locality teams working with district and community nursing teams. Community members of staff also provide care to patients in their homes and from a number of clinics, health centres and GP surgeries.

 

Job overview

We are very busy Emergency Department, treating on average 50,000 patients a year.  We are looking for a Band 6 Sister / Charge Nurse to join our pro-active and dynamic team.

Are you a qualified registered Children's Nurse with broad and relevant post registration experience at Band 5 or above in ED nursing or general paediatrics? Do you hold a mentorship qualification and have a child protection qualification or experience? Do you have leadership skills and can you effectively contribute to team working in a busy and dynamic work environment?

This is your opportunity to help shape the development of children's designated emergency care area within Emergency Department. You will have the ability to assess and commence high impact interventions supported by PGDs while awaiting assessment by paediatrician.

You will be part of a team of paediatric nurses working in the Emergency Department, providing care being confident in the role of patient's advocate in order to maintain safe and compassionate care of children and families within ED. Competent and/or willing to undertake further relevant training in the management of paediatric minor illnesses and minor injuries.
A minimum of 2 yrs post-qualification experience in an urgent care setting is desirable.

 

Main duties of the job

To provide high quality, effective, individualised care to all patients by assessing care needs and developing, implementing and evaluating them without supervision.

To assist the matrons in supporting the nursing team in regard to paediatric nursing care.

Monitor standards of paediatric nursing care and take appropriate action to maintain and improve them.

To respond to patients and their relatives/carers concerns as they arise and take remedial action as required.

To provide children and carers/parents on-going referrals for support/treatments when necessary in the community.

To respond to patients, relatives and carers concerns as they arise and take remedial action as required.

To provide assessment, recognition, prioritisation and evaluation of children with minor injuries /serious illness /injury presenting for urgent care.

To manage paediatric minor illnesses and minor injuries within scope of competency using PGD where available and seek clinical support from U&EC consultants or paediatric consultants or senior paediatric doctor when required.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Children’s Nurse with active registration
  • Mentorship Qualification
  • Educated to degree level
  • EPALS/APLS certificate
  • Evidence of relevant post-graduate courses / training in speciality
  • Child protection qualification (or to complete in post)

Experience

Essential criteria
