Main Duties and Responsibilities

Communication

· To communicate effectively with patients and their families

· To communicate effectively with doctors, nurses and orthoptists

· Communicate both verbally and in writing with GPs

· Support verbal communication by providing written educational material to patients and carers if required

· Utilise the interpreting service for patients with language barrier

· Ensure the provision of a quality and co-ordinated service by establishing and maintaining liaison amongst all disciplines in patient care within the Trust

· Attend departmental meetings for the Ophthalmology department, communicating effectively and developing positive working relationships with other team members

Service Delivery and Improvement

· To identify opportunities for service, role and practice development within the Ophthalmic Service

· To assist with the implementation and evaluation of areas of practice/service development

· To review and develop written policies/protocols relevant to clinical procedures as necessary

· To undertake specific projects as requested by the Consultant Optometrist, Ophthalmologist body & Department Manager

· To participate in service reviews or improvement events and initiatives to drive improved patient experience, quality and productivity

· To take part in departmental audit

People Management and Development

· Assist in training and education for Community optometrists and GPs as required

· Keep up to date with current research and evidence-based practice by attending relevant meetings, courses and seminars. Responsible for sharing knowledge with other professionals and team to influence better care and outcomes for patients

· To keep documentary evidence of Continuing Professional Development and use personal development, clinical supervision, appraisal and Knowledge and Skills Framework

· To be involved and act as a role model for clinical placements of work experience students, orthoptic students, optometry students, medical students, GPs, health visitors

· To be able to supervise less experienced staff and students

· To participate in health promotion for GPs and community optometry services

· To partake in appraisal as an appraisee

· To continue to update and develop own clinical and theoretical knowledge of eye care pathways including areas of clinical research

· To participate in any related research programmes which have been formally agreed

· In agreement with the team, identify areas for and actively participate in audit

Background

Every three minutes someone in the UK develops dementia: a progressive and complex condition that can be devastating for the whole family. One in two of us will be affected by dementia in our lifetime – either by caring for someone with the condition, developing it ourselves, or both.

Dementia UK is the specialist dementia nursing charity that is there for the whole family. Our specialist nurses, known as Admiral Nurses, provide free, expert advice, support and understanding to help families care for their loved one. Every day, Admiral Nurses help families up and down the country to have the best life possible, for as long as possible.

Purpose of the job/about the role

Dementia UK has entered into an exciting three-year corporate partnership with a national partner. As a key component of this initiative, we will establish face-to-face Admiral Nurse clinics across the UK. This new team will bring Admiral Nursing to high street locations across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

As part of the national Clinics Programme Team, you will provide in-person biopsychosocial support and advice, sharing your specialist dementia nursing expertise to help families manage the complexities of the condition. Your focus will be on supporting family carers, people affected by dementia, and professionals who require specialist dementia guidance in areas of the UK where Admiral Nurse services are currently unavailable, bringing a much-needed service directly to local communities. Throughout your work, you will consistently promote Admiral Nursing and a family-centred approach to dementia care.

You will receive full support with your continuous professional development from the Admiral Nurse Academy.

As this unique nursing role offers you the opportunity to travel across the country, and will include overnight stays, flexibility is essential. When not delivering face-to-face clinics, you will provide support on our Helpline, working from home.

Admiral Nurse – Delivered Services

Join our Delivered Services team as an Admiral Nurse and bring your specialist dementia nursing expertise to support family carers, people affected by dementia, and professionals who require specialist advice. You’ll be a key member of our team, providing biopsychosocial support through our National Dementia Helpline and Virtual Clinic appointments.

In addition to your core responsibilities, you’ll have the opportunity to lead and support other clinical projects across the charity, benefit from monthly clinical supervision, and participate in a range of learning opportunities to support your ongoing professional development.

As an Admiral Nurse, you’ll be responsible for providing nursing support and expertise, offering practical guidance to colleagues, the general public, those with dementia, and others in supporting family and relationship-centered approaches to dementia care. You’ll also lead and coordinate shifts as required, providing clinical supervision to others and assist with the development, evaluation, audit of the service, carer and supporters in different settings.

To be successful in this position, you’ll need to be an active Registered Nurse on the NMC register with a post-registration qualification or training in dementia care or a relevant subject. You will have significant experience of practicing as an Admiral Nurse or dementia specialist nurse and previously worked with people who have dementia and their family, carer and supporters in different settings.

Strong communication skills are essential, as is a proven track record of providing high standards of clinical leadership and specialist nursing support. You should be adept at providing clinical advice, clinical supervision, and advocating for family carers.
