At Rye, Winchelsea and District Memorial Hospital we offer outpatients, rehabilitation and intermediate services. At Uckfield Community Hospital we provide day surgery and outpatient care.

In the community, we deliver services that focus on people with long term conditions living well outside hospital, through our integrated locality teams working with district and community nursing teams. Community members of staff also provide care to patients in their homes and from a number of clinics, health centres and GP surgeries.

 

Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for experienced maternity support workers to join one of our continuity teams, within the maternity department at East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust.  We are looking for a Maternity support worker who will be based predominantly within the Maple continuity midwifery team, who provide care to those with diabetes, but will also work alongside the core community maternity service.   We are looking for staff who are committed to a high standard of care. You must possess good communication skills, be able to work on your own as well as part of the multi-disciplinary team and be committed to providing an excellent service.

You would be working closely with the community midwives across the maternity community service caring and supporting women within the Ante natal and Post natal periods.    An ability to demonstrate highly developed communication skills along with a high level of customer service is essential. Good computer skills are required.

You will need to be flexible, working 4 days a week on weekdays with 3 of those days being 08:00-16:00 and on a Wednesday finishing at 17:30.  You will also need to be enthusiastic and well-motivated. 

An orientation and training programme will be provided.

Main duties of the job

East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust has an exciting opportunity for experienced Support Workers to join our Continuity/Community Midwifery Team.

The applicants must be enthusiastic and passionate about the support of the antenatal woman/pregnant person, postnatal mother/parent and baby in a variety of settings including children's centres, hospital clinics and people's homes predominantly in Hastings and Bexhill but also the surrounding towns and villages. You will be working closely with the community and specialist midwives to ensure a high standard of care.

You will be undertaking first point of contact to those who have recently referred to maternity, conduct glucose blood tests to determine if someone is diabetic, provide postnatal checks including infant feeding support.  

Due to some elements of lone working the applicant needs to be an excellent communicator and self motivated in their approach.

Applicants must have NVQ Level 3. A driving license and a car are essential to be able to move independently between sites in a timely manner. While the post is mainly based within the Conquest community settings you will also support a clinic at the Conquest and another at Eastbourne district hospital. We are looking for an experienced maternity support worker to ensure the successful candidate can adapt to the role relatively quickly.

Maternity at the Conquest is a friendly team who work hard to provide care to the local population.  The community and caseloading teams mainly work from childrens and health centres so we can be close to the population we are seeing. As small teams we work cohesively with each other and other professionals such as Health visitors.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) Level 3 in Health and Social Care OR an acceptable level 3 Qualification with equivalent experience.
  • Satisfactory General Education and evidence of additional training relevant to role.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Previous / current experience in a Health or Social Care environment
  • Experience of working independently as well as part of a team
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience of working as a maternity support worker

Skills

  • Knowledge of basic infection control
