Our centre for trauma services and obstetrics is at Conquest Hospital, while our centre for urology and stroke services is at Eastbourne DGH. At Bexhill Hospital we offer a range of outpatient, day surgery, rehabilitation and intermediate care services. At Rye, Winchelsea and District Memorial Hospital we offer outpatients, rehabilitation and intermediate services. At Uckfield Community Hospital we provide day surgery and outpatient care.

In the community, we deliver services that focus on people with long term conditions living well outside hospital, through our integrated locality teams working with district and community nursing teams. Community members of staff also provide care to patients in their homes and from a number of clinics, health centres and GP surgeries.

 

Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated, enthusiastic, experienced and suitably qualified nurse to join our dynamic and progressive Supportive and Palliative Care Team at East Sussex Healthcare Trust.  We are an established team providing an inpatient consultancy service across two hospital sites to support patients with malignant and non-malignant disease with specialist palliative care and end of life care needs.

We are looking for candidates with excellent communication skills, who can work autonomously and as part of an inter-disciplinary team with the ability to prioritise and work to deadlines without compromising care. You will need to demonstrate clinical expertise in the field of specialist palliative care and a commitment to continuous learning.

You will be expected to exercise a high degree of personal and professional autonomy and make critical judgements to satisfy the expectations and demands of the role. It is essential that you have at least 5 years post registration experience with 2 years working at band 6 or above in palliative care either in a hospital, community or hospice setting. There are 2 posts  with the potential for a full time post and a part time post or two part time posts depending on candidates.

You must be educated to degree level and ideally possess a non medical prescribing qualification or being willing to undertake this course.

Main duties of the job

One post will be based at Eastbourne Hospital, the other at Conquest but there is an expectation of cross site working as needed. The core hours of the team are 8am – 4pm 7 days a week and you will be expected to work 1 in 4 weekends.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Supportive and Palliative Care Team working within the acute hospitals of the East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust. 

The post is challenging but will provide you with varied experience and opportunities for professional development within a friendly and supportive team. 

You will be working  as part of a dedicated specialist team supporting patients with life limiting illnesses and those closest to them, providing specialist evidence-based advice on symptom control and end of life care. We are an advisory service working closely with our colleagues on adult wards and our hospice partners.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • RGN (NMC level one registration)
  • Degree with evidence of modules relating to palliative care / EOLC
  • Non medical prescribing qualification or willingness to undertake this
  • Evidence of continuous personal, professional and academic development, to masters or equivalent level of knowledge and experience
  • Advanced communication skills training
  • Mentorship

  • Counselling skills

Experience

Essential criteria
  • 5 years post registration experience, with 2 years working at band 6 or above in palliative care in a hospital, community or hospice setting

  • Experience of supporting and influencing change
