In the summer of 2020, the Trust launched its ambitious ‘Building for our Future’ (BFF) programme. This once in a lifetime programme aims to redevelop and expand our hospitals at Eastbourne, Hastings and Bexhill, transforming the environment in which we provide care for generations to come.

Our centre for trauma services and obstetrics is at Conquest Hospital, while our centre for urology and stroke services is at Eastbourne DGH. At Bexhill Hospital we offer a range of outpatient, day surgery, rehabilitation and intermediate care services. At Rye, Winchelsea and District Memorial Hospital we offer outpatients, rehabilitation and intermediate services. At Uckfield Community Hospital we provide day surgery and outpatient care.
In the community, we deliver services that focus on people with long term conditions living well outside hospital, through our integrated locality teams working with district and community nursing teams. Community members of staff also provide care to patients in their homes and from a number of clinics, health centres and GP surgeries.
Job overview
The overall purpose of the role is to ensure that the Trust has a robust training programme and assurance around the use of high-risk medical devices and to be the main expert resource in this area. This includes working effectively with clinical leads and the MDSO to respond to National Patient Safety Alerts where high risk medical device knowledge is required. Incident investigation and supporting the Patient Safety and Incident Response Framework (PSIRF) Education plan are key components of the role is a key component of the role promoting learning and the safe use of medical devices across our Trust sites. |
Main duties of the job
Key duties and responsibilities 1. Establish, maintain and monitor an effective training needs analysis, policy and programme for the competency and use of high-risk medical devices, 2. Devise and deliver an annual programme of work including audits and be responsible for developing and meeting performance indicators, 3. Manage and deliver specialist training to groups of staff for high-risk Medical Devices and Oxygen across the Trust sites, 4. Provide clear and concise quarterly and annual quality assurance reports on training compliance, risks and incidents in relation to high-risk medical devices, 5. Ensure medical device incidents are reported in line with Patient Safety Incident Response Framework (PSIRF) and Learning from Patient Safety Events (LFPSE), 6. Review incidents relating to medical devices providing recommendations and expert advice, 7. Provide authoritative and reliable advice in supporting healthcare staff in the safe use of high-risk medical devices, 8. Develop and maintain working relationships with the Practice Educator network to ensure consistent delivery of training, 9. Work with the head of clinical engineering and clinical and procurement teams advising on the acquisition of high-risk medical devices, 10. Monitor trials of high-risk medical devices, |

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Clinical Nursing or healthcare science (medical device) professional qualification
- Educated to Master’s degree level or an equivalent level (combination of post grad study and experience) in medical devices or other healthcare technology,
- Evidence of continuing professional development
Desirable criteria
- Recognised leadership qualification at diploma or above
- PTLLS
- Project management qualification e.g. PRINCE 2
- BSC or HND in a relevant scientific or engineering subject
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience in the operation and function of patient critical equipment and techniques in healthcare
- Analysing, compiling and writing reports
- Experience of undertaking risk assessments on medical devices and the ability to innovate to minimise or mitigate risk where appropriate,
- Managing projects with evidenced successful outcomes
- Development, implementation and monitoring of policy
- A broad understanding of risk and incident management with a high level of understanding of human behaviour and the patient and staff safety risks that may arise
Desirable criteria
- Experience of working within a governance and risk environment
- Experience in research with the ability to advise on and analyse product trials
