In the summer of 2020, the Trust launched its ambitious ‘Building for our Future’ (BFF) programme. This once in a lifetime programme aims to redevelop and expand our hospitals at Eastbourne, Hastings and Bexhill, transforming the environment in which we provide care for generations to come.

Our centre for trauma services and obstetrics is at Conquest Hospital, while our centre for urology and stroke services is at Eastbourne DGH. At Bexhill Hospital we offer a range of outpatient, day surgery, rehabilitation and intermediate care services. At Rye, Winchelsea and District Memorial Hospital we offer outpatients, rehabilitation and intermediate services. At Uckfield Community Hospital we provide day surgery and outpatient care.
In the community, we deliver services that focus on people with long term conditions living well outside hospital, through our integrated locality teams working with district and community nursing teams. Community members of staff also provide care to patients in their homes and from a number of clinics, health centres and GP surgeries.
Job overview
HSDU Technician (Band 2)
An interesting and exciting opportunity has arisen for people with a genuine interest in healthcare and patient safety to become part of the team within the Hospital Sterilisation and Decontamination Unit (HSDU) we provide operating theatres, wards and departments with surgical instruments and medical devices required for sterile procedures. This job role supports the clinical and surgical teams in the provision of excellent, high quality and safe patient care.
Hours of posts: 37.5 hours per week - part time will be considered
Working pattern:
Monday - Friday 2pm to 10pm
The role may also require some flexibility with cross-site working between the Trust’s two acute hospitals; Eastbourne District General Hospital and Conquest Hospital, therefore the ability to travel between sites independently is required.
Main duties of the job
We are looking for applicants who are able to demonstrate good manual dexterity, maintain high levels of attention to detail, possess good written and verbal skills and be capable of interacting with staff at all levels on a day to day basis. You must be enthusiastic, have a good general education and have the ability to follow instructions and processes. Experience of working in Sterile Services would be advantageous, but is not essential as full training will be given. The successful individual will become proficient, through training, in providing quality sterilised goods to both Internal and External Customers. Applicants must have an adaptable, flexible approach to work and be able to demonstrate they can work very well within a team, as well as on their own.
We deliver most of our acute services from Conquest Hospital in Hastings and Eastbourne District General Hospital. Both hospitals have an Emergency Department and provide care 24 hours a day. Our hospitals offer a comprehensive range of surgical, medical and maternity services supported by a full range of diagnostic and therapy services. Our community services are provided throughout East Sussex by our community teams, who provide care in the patient’s own home and from a number of clinics and GP surgeries.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities
Essential criteria
- Ability to lift loads in the region of 15 kilos
- Ability to work under pressure and to written procedures with a sense of urgency whilst maintaining high standards of work.
- Ability to work as part of a team
- Able to work in an area which deals with equipment used in surgical operations
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Desirable criteria
- When fully trained and competent, willing to participate in the weekend on-call rota.
