The Conquest Hospital in Hastings and our Community Services were rated ‘Outstanding’ and Eastbourne DGH was rated ‘Good’ Our two acute hospitals have Emergency Departments and provide 24 hour a day care, offering a comprehensive range of surgical, medical, outpatient and maternity services, supported by a full range of diagnostic and therapy services.
In the summer of 2020, the Trust launched its ambitious ‘Building for our Future’ (BFF) programme. This once in a lifetime programme aims to redevelop and expand our hospitals at Eastbourne, Hastings and Bexhill, transforming the environment in which we provide care for generations to come.

Our centre for trauma services and obstetrics is at Conquest Hospital, while our centre for urology and stroke services is at Eastbourne DGH. At Bexhill Hospital we offer a range of outpatient, day surgery, rehabilitation and intermediate care services. At Rye, Winchelsea and District Memorial Hospital we offer outpatients, rehabilitation and intermediate services. At Uckfield Community Hospital we provide day surgery and outpatient care.
In the community, we deliver services that focus on people with long term conditions living well outside hospital, through our integrated locality teams working with district and community nursing teams. Community members of staff also provide care to patients in their homes and from a number of clinics, health centres and GP surgeries.
Job overview
An excellent opportunity for Matron of the Day Surgery Unit at Eastbourne District General Hospital which will lead to the opening of the Sussex Surgical Centre in March 2025 to be the Matron lead for the DSU/SSC for pre/post operative care on the ward and pre-assessment.
Our Day Surgery Unit at Eastbourne undertakes a range of procedures ranging from Trauma & Orthopaedics, Max Fax, ENT, Urology, Vascular, General Surgery, Gynaecology and Community Dental services. These specialties are continuously evolving in line with the needs of the service.
The post holder must be working as a Registered General Nurse or ODP with a degree qualification. Minimum of 3 years at Band 6 and will require a significant amount of peri/post operative/ pre-assessment surgical experience. The post holder must have a recognised leadership qualification and supporting evidence.
The post holder will be responsible for leading and delivering the Theatre Strategy alongside the Head of Nursing, General Manager and Theatre Service Manager in order to facilitate operational care delivery for our patients.
The post holder will work alongside the Matron leads for Theatre and PACU for the new Sussex Surgical Centre due to open in March 2025. The post holder will be involved with implementing new ways of working and supporting the clinical teams as we transfer services to the new centre.
The successful applicant will be supported in their own professional development by the Head of Nursing.
Main duties of the job
The post holder is accountable for their department and will:
Be a professional role model leading and co-ordinating the team, taking 24 hour responsibility for the management of the Day Surgery Unit and SSC. This role involves managing a wide range of complex and competing priorities.
Some cross site and cohesive working with the Theatre Leadership Team.

- Three Years’ experience Band 6 or significant amount of experience in relevant theatre speciality
- Experience of working with senior medical staff and managing personnel and operating lists.

- Good keyboard and IT skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office Word and Outlook
