Job overview

University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust Security Dept is looking for a person with excellent managerial and communication skills who is able to work effectively under pressure and can demonstrate a comprehensive understanding and knowledge of criminal law, CCTV control room operations, and security incident management. The post holder will have the ability to carry out all of the functions associated with the roles as identified within the job description. The post holder will be integral to the maintenance of a safe working environment through incident analysis, partnership working, crime reduction initiatives, and applying NHS Security standards pertaining to safe and secure environments and tackling violence and aggression.

 Assisting the Security & Car Parking Manager & Deputy Security Manager in the supervision of Security staff on assigned shift. Responsibilities will include interviewing and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems

 

 

 

Main duties of the job

Duties will include:

 

·         Protecting staff, patients and visitors from acts of violence and abuse ensuring wherever possible evidence is gathered and preserved to secure conviction of offenders.  This will on occasion involve direct engagement with patients displaying challenging behaviour.

·         Undertaking initial investigation of thefts and other security incidents across the Trust and providing crime prevention & remedial security advice to victims of crime and ward/department Managers.

·         Supporting the Security Management team in maintaining records and monitoring crime trends locally and site wide.

·         Provide line management support to Security Team Leaders and Officers.

·         Deputising for the Security & Car Parking Manager, when the Deputy Security Manager is not available.

·         To establish and maintain positive working relationships with police and criminal justice services.

·        The post holder may be required to advise and support in security matters with senior colleagues and external contractors

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

·         Work with the Security and Car Parking Manager & Security Deputy Manager, Police & CPS to ensure criminal cases are progressed accordingly, including attendance at Court.

·         Ensure Security incidents are investigated and reported in accordance with Trust Policy & Security Dept procedures.

·         Deal sensitively and in an empathetic manner with staff, visitors & patients who present with complex and highly emotive issues as a result of the wider impact of crime including violence and physical assaults.

·         Ensure that all NHS security work is carried out within the professional and ethical procedures of the Security Dept.

·         Provide input to Capital Development schemes and refurbishments to maximise the opportunity to “design out crime” from the Trust’s built environment and to achieve Secured by Design status for new build & refurbished estate.

 

·         Manage the day to day arrangements for Traffic management & car parking facilities in order to maximise the availability of parking facilities for patients, visitors & staff.

·         Keep up to date with relevant legislation, guidance, strategies, best practice and funding opportunities and advise the Trust accordingly.

·         Maintain a good understanding of available new technologies and techniques relevant to the service.

·         Contribute to service development and delivery and business planning with the department managers and senior managers.

·         Monitor, interpret and apply national and UHSx NHS Trust-based policies relevant to the department.

·         Manage and address any issues relating to a breach in UHSx NHS Trust policies.

·         Produce regular detailed informational reports and analysis to members of the management team.  Attend departmental or divisional meetings which are relevant to the role.

·         Responsible for the maintenance of a number of information sources.

·         Advise on a range of criminal and administrative sanctions available against those responsible for physical assaults on staff, theft, criminal damage and other offences.

·         Raise incidents of violence and aggression inc. physical assault on staff to members of the management team to ensure incidents are analysed and reported to NHS SMS in accordance with the Secretary of State Directions’.

·         Deal sensitively and in an empathetic manner with staff who present with complex and highly emotive issues as a result of the wider impact of violence and physical assaults.

·         Have line management responsibility for Security Dept staff including Security Team Leaders, Security Officers, Control Room Operators, Traffic Officers and Agency Security Officers.

·         Support the Security Manager in ensuring the level of expenditure within management remit and is contained with the agreed target.

·         Ensure department mandatory and statutory training records are maintained up to date and officers remain in date within the time frame specified by L&D.

Responsible for carrying out S.M.A.R.T. annual appraisals in line with Trust policy for Team Leaders, Security officers and Traffic officers.
