Job overview
We are looking to recruit a Physiotherapy Assistant to work within the inpatient orthopaedic and vascular physiotherapy service at Royal Sussex County Hospital. Applicants should have some experience working with patients in the healthcare setting and an enthusiasm and/or background in exercise and rehabilitation. Applicants must have excellent, adaptable communication skills and enjoy working in a busy team environment, in a variety of settings.
A band 2 physiotherapy assistant may work without being directly supervised by a physiotherapist, but will have immediate access to a physiotherapist on site or by telephone/bleep
The post holder will be expected to use a minimal amount of clinical judgement and freedom to act when undertaking their work whilst remaining within agreed protocols
Main duties of the job
To assist the physiotherapists in the assessment and treatment of inpatients across the orthopaedic and vascular wards in order to promote independence and mobility.
Duties will include mobilising patients, safety on stairs, teaching of exercises and the issuing of equipment in order to facilitate a safe discharge from hospital. In addition providing administrative support to the team.
Physiotherapy assistants are directly supervised by a senior physiotherapy. Once relevant competencies have been achieved you may be required to manage a delegated caseload of patients with non-complex presentation, within clearly defined parameters, without direct supervision and report back to the qualified therapist as necessary.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Provide support to the team with administration, clerical and housekeeping duties
Assist the therapists in the assessment and treatment of patients with physical and/or cognitive impairments.
Deliver treatment plans devised by physiotherapists to promote independence and recovery.
Instruct patients in the use of walking aids and provide advice to patients and carers regarding safety issues associated with walking aids according to UHS protocols.
Liaise with patients, families, carers, outside agencies etc. to optimise patient care and discharge planning
Attend staff meetings and in-service training sessions,.
Actively promote and develop equality and diversity practices and promote equity of access of care for patients.
The post would include participation in an Orthopaedic Weekend Rota following completion of appropriate training.

Qualifications and Experience
Essential criteria
- GCSE or equivalant in English and Maths
- Basic Knowledge and interest of human anatomy / physiology / rehabilitation
Desirable criteria
- Current or previous experience working in a health or care setting
- NVQ in health related subject
Communication

- Evidence of effective and appropriate verbal and written communication skills
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of working with individuals with communication difficulties
Skills
Essential criteria
- Evidence as having worked as part of a team
- Evidence of being able to work independently
- Able to present information, written and orally in a clear and logical manner
