An exciting opportunity has arisen for Band 5 Registered Adult to join the Emergency Department at the Royal Sussex County Hospital.

We are also a designated adult Major Trauma Centre, one of only 22 in England. We are also a  standard Trauma Centre for Paediatrics and are supported in the care of these patients by our colleagues from the dedicated children's Emergency Department at the co-located Royal Alexandra Childrens' Hospital.

The Emergency Department consists of a Resuscitation department with 5 adult bays.  25  Major spaces, a dedicated Urgent Treatment centre supported by a GP service and Emergency Nurse Practitioners. There is a 12 chaired Ambulatory Clinical Decision’s Unit. The ED is also support by our embedded mental health liaison team provided by Sussex Partnership NHS Trust. 

The ED is a busy and clinically diverse environment and you will work in all areas of the department supporting patients arriving both by themselves or with the ambulance service. You should expect to be busy throughout your shift and be ready to work flexibly and to respond to rapidly changing circumstances.

Main duties of the job

We are keen to recruit enthusiastic, motivated nurses, who are able to work in a fast paced and at times challenging environment. Applicants should ideally have a some acute experience but newly qualified will be considered.

Main duties include

  • Deliver high quality, compassionate care appropriate to their skills, experience, qualifications and competence, with a focus on promoting health and independence 

  • Have proficient attitudes and behaviours compatible with NHS Values 
  • Work as part of a designated clinical and care team delivering care that focuses on the direct needs of the individual 

  • Autonomously carry out clinical and care tasks and responsibilities to a high standard and competency, or under the direction and supervision of a more senior registered nurse, or other registered care professionals, where competency in that area is still developing 

  • Take responsibility for developing own clinical competence, leadership and reflective practice skills within the workplace

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Provide patients emergency care in all areas of the ED  

  • Timely multi-tasking and prioritising to meet excessive service demand.  

  • Work in collaboration with all team members to ensure that care delivery is evidence based and in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct.  

  • Assessment of care needs and development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care.  

  • Identify patients individual dependency care needs and provide support for physical, psychological and social requirements.  

  • Rapid assessment and early identification of serious illness and /or injury and initiation of urgent treatment.  

  • Participate in the assessment, implementation and delivery of individualised patient care, seeking guidance as appropriate 

  • Take charge of a group of patients with support appropriate to your level of experience and competency  

  • Participate in supporting relatives and friends following traumatic events, serious injury, illness and death of children and adults.  

  • Provide care for aggressive and/or violent patients whilst optimising other patients’ safety whilst promoting and protecting your own safety 

  • Actively participate in the care pathways associated with patients presenting with Mental Health issues in frequent challenging circumstances.
