This post is ideal for someone who is seriously considering a career as a Chief Medical Officer (CMO) as it provides a breadth of experience in both professional and corporate areas. The Deputy Chief Medical Officer (DCMO) will agree on a balanced portfolio that offers exceptional experience in medical leadership across our diverse Community Trust and the wider system. They will chair Trust-wide groups and will be a visible, respected, and key senior clinical leader.

Main duties of the job

  • Professional Leadership: Work closely with the Chief Medical Officer to provide leadership and development to the medical and dental workforce, ensuring delivery of patient-centred, safe, and high-quality care.
  • Governance and Safety: Ensure appropriate governance and leadership of the Trust’s Research and Innovation programme, and ensure clinical services are safe, placing quality of care at the heart of the Trust’s work.
  • Operational Advice: Work with the Chief Operating Officer to provide professional advice on operational issues.
  • System-wide Collaboration: Liaise with partner organisations, including the Integrated Care Board and other Trusts, to develop system-wide solutions to improve health and healthcare for the population of Sussex.
  • Leadership and Inspiration: Lead, motivate, and inspire our medical and dental colleagues, ensuring the highest professional standards, attitudes, and behaviours.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Corporate Responsibilities:

  • Deputise for the Medical Director at the Trust Board, Board Committees, other Trust groups and across the Sussex system.
  • Assist the CMO in forming the Trust’s clinical strategy.
  • Take on Trust-wide leadership responsibilities as agreed with the CMO.

Leadership to Directorate Clinical Directors:

  • Provide leadership to the Directorate Clinical Directors across urgent and emergency care and planned care services.
  • Shape the transformation and improvement of these services.

Professional Leadership and Standards:

  • Ensure the medical and dental professions play a full role in the Trust’s clinical leadership development.
  • Maintain alignment and compliance with regulatory body requirements.

Governance and Safe, High-Quality Care:

  • Collaborate with the Chief Nurse and CMO to ensure the Trust delivers safe, high-quality care.
  • Chair various clinical review panels and promote a culture of accountability in governance and risk management.

Research and Innovation:

  • Lead the Trust’s Research & Innovation programme and support the Clinical Director of Research and Innovation.
  • Develop partnerships with local universities and national bodies to embed research in our strategy.

Workforce Development:

  • Promote clinical excellence through robust arrangements for induction, clinical supervision, job planning, and continuing professional development.
  • Act as a role model for aspiring medical leaders and support the development of clinical leaders across the Trust.

Financial Responsibility:

  • Contribute to business planning and the management of the CMO Budget in conjunction with the other members of the Leadership Team

  • • Proven record in Medical Management and /or leadership of at least Clinical Director/Medical Lead level
