This position will play a key role in delivering Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust’s (SCFT) multi award-winning sustainability programme, Care Without Carbon, which includes working both within SCFT but also in a consultancy-based role with our partner organisations across Sussex, Surrey and beyond.

Energy and water consumption are large areas of expenditure and therefore, specifically, the post-holder will be responsible for day-to-day supplier invoice processing which involves validation for accuracy, arranging for any errors to be resolved accordingly and the storing of this vital data within our energy management database. The post-holder will also assist with broader analysis and reporting, and the development and implementation of project work across core areas of the CWC programme.

  • Energy and water management – assisting  the implementation of SCFT’s Energy and Water Management Policy across the Trust and any partner healthcare organisations as required. This chiefly includes management of day-to-day energy and water invoice validation, liaison with energy and water suppliers and associated resolution of any queries that may arise. It will also entail delivering training to staff, assisting with maintaining legal compliance with respect to relevant regulations and coordinating and supporting on site visits.
  • Energy and water conservation projects – assist other members of the Energy Team with identifying opportunities for, and supporting the design and delivery of, projects that further the Trust’s goals around energy and water management.
  • Reporting and data management – taking responsibility for storing and co-ordinating data for key aspects of the Energy Team’s internal and external energy, water and other reporting processes, including designing and managing reporting tools, interrogating and interpreting data and delivering key performance indicators relating to energy and water consumption.

  • The post-holder will work as part of a wider multi-disciplinary team that also provides integrated sustainability, energy and carbon management services to NHS and other public sector organisations across the UK. They may have responsibility for delivering project work with and on behalf of other NHS providers within the Sussex Integrated Care System.

General:

Support the Energy Officer and the wider team to deliver CWC, developing and managing specific initiatives to achieve Trust sustainability targets.

Energy and Water Management

Be the first line contact of the Trust’s Shared Energy Services Bureau that provides a range of services to SCFT and other client trusts and providers across Sussex, in addition to the NHS Sussex ICB. In particular, oversee day-to-day invoicing and the management and resolution of queries that arise from this and other aspects of operational energy and water management. Assist the Energy Team, SCFT and other client trusts across Sussex with maintaining compliance with certain compliance obligations regarding energy use in buildings. Additionally, ensure robust records of meter read data are maintained. 

Energy and Water Projects

Through site surveys and data analysis the post-holder may assist in the design and implement specific projects to deliver the Trusts sustainability targets. Projects will focus on energy and water consumption reduction, carbon emissions reduction, and resource efficiency.

Staff Engagement

Good awareness as to the importance of energy and water conservation and good consumption housekeeping continues to play an important role in robust energy and water management and thus is important to the success of the Trust’s net zero carbon ambitions. The postholder will work closely with in-house communications experts, and the rest of the Energy Team, to assist in the delivery of communications and engagement programmes from an energy and water conservation perspective.

Reporting and Data Management

Work with other members of the Energy Team to develop and maintain the Trust’s energy and water data management systems and processes (including assisting with the upkeep and expansion of its bespoke energy management software package), undertake annual, and in-year, reporting activities (such as monthly KPI reports).

 Main tasks 

General

  • Support the design and running of energy and water management and other workshops and training sessions for SCFT staff to support delivery of CWC.
  • Support the wider CWC staff engagement programme as necessary. This includes attending internal and external events, meetings and training sessions as part of the CWC team engaging staff and other stakeholders around sustainability.
  • Provide input into the CWC Envoy programme, primarily around energy and water management.
  • Contribute to the development of relevant Trust policies as appropriate, e.g. Energy and Water Management Policy.
  • Represent the Trust on national and local best practice forums, steering groups and networks and present case studies at national and international conferences. 

Energy and Water Management

  • Be the front-line contact for SCFT’s Shared Energy Services Bureau which provides a range of energy and water management services to both the Trust and clients and partners across Sussex, including NHS Sussex ICB. Directing and responding to queries by assisting with taking calls and managing the email inbox.
  • Undertake day-to-day energy and water invoice validation and work with suppliers and NHS staff to manage and resolve the complex queries that commonly arise from/or are related to it.
  • Plan and facilitate meetings with Trust suppliers to assist with ongoing supplier management, specifically relating to keeping aged debt low and resolving persistent, and more complex, invoicing queries.
  • Support the Energy Team with developing and maintaining systems to, and undertaking work for, maintaining compliance with various legal and non-legal compliance obligations pertaining to the use of energy and water in buildings.
  • Undertake site visits particularly for the purpose of obtaining meter reads, but for other purposes as may from time to time be required.
  • Assist with the upkeep, renewal and expansion of SCFT’s metering systems, and for other clients and partners across Sussex as appropriate.
  • Keep up to date with relevant general energy Industry innovations and updates and, as appropriate, assist in the implementation of changes to processes to accommodate these and so assistant in continuous improvement of service.

Energy and Water Conservation Projects

  • Assist in identifying, developing and implementing energy and water 
    conservation and management projects and audits, or more general 
    sustainability related projects as appropriate.

Staff Engagement

  • Work with the Energy Team and in-house communications experts to support the development and delivery of the staff engagement and behavioural change work from an energy and water conservation perspective.
  • Attend inductions, team meetings and other Trust events to raise awareness of the programme, its goals and opportunities for staff to get involved in its delivery. Assist in the development of resources that would be appropriate for this.
  • Assist in the development and delivery of the Care Without Carbon Envoy (“green champion”) programme, ensuring outcomes are aligned to the Trust and regional Green Plans.
  • Be involved with regional staff engagement programmes and projects as appropriate.

Data Analysis & Reporting

  • Work with other members of the Energy Team to develop and maintain the Trust’s bespoke energy and water management software.
  • Develop and maintain accurate and reliable varied datasets used by the Energy Team (and wider Sustainability and Environment Team as appropriate) for use in a multitude of reporting outputs that the team undertakes.
  • Undertake a range of different reporting activities pertaining to all areas of energy and water consumption and carbon emissions and assist with ongoing development of performance metrics and improvements to reporting processes and procedures.
  • Utilise data analysis processes and systems to identify opportunities to deliver environmental performance improvements and cost savings.

  • Confident written and verbal and communication skills – comfortable delivering training and presentations.
  • Excellent team player but able to work on own initiative.
  • Ability to take initiative and work autonomously.
  • Confident and proficient in use of Microsoft Excel, and in the ability to familiarise self with new and/or bespoke computer software packages and databases.
