At Rye, Winchelsea and District Memorial Hospital we offer outpatients, rehabilitation and intermediate services. At Uckfield Community Hospital we provide day surgery and outpatient care.

In the community, we deliver services that focus on people with long term conditions living well outside hospital, through our integrated locality teams working with district and community nursing teams. Community members of staff also provide care to patients in their homes and from a number of clinics, health centres and GP surgeries.

 

Job overview

East Sussex Diabetic Eye Screening Programme (DESP), is seeking to appoint a slit lamp examiner on a part time basis.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and qualified slit lamp examiner, Optometrist or Orthoptist with experience in operating a slit lamp to examine the retina, with the purpose of detecting Diabetic Retinopathy. You will be working across several community sites within East Sussex, predominantly within the Bexhill and Eastbourne areas.

The post holder will be required to also undertake grading of patient retinal images within this role, and complete monthly Test and Training sets for quality assurance purposes.

This post would be suited to a newly qualified Optometrist looking to gain some experience in diabetic retinopathy or to someone already working within the diabetic eye screening programme as a slit lamp examiner.  Slit lamp experience is essential for this post. 

Please be aware, that depending on your level of qualification you may be required to complete a Diploma in Health Screening to work within the programme. 

 

Main duties of the job

To be a Slit Lamp Examiner responsible for the provision of a Slit Lamp Bio-microscopy as part of the East Sussex Diabetic Eye Screening programme. The post holder will work as an autonomous practitioner, undertaking SLB clinics in community locations using advanced clinical techniques to look for and diagnose the signs of diabetic retinopathy along with any incidental findings of non-diabetic related eye disease within a framework agreed by the Clinical Lead, Senior Grader and Programme Manager.

Working collaboratively with the DESP team by partaking in the grading of images; there will also be opportunities to participate in audit and research as required and to provide teaching/training at Multi-Disciplinary Meetings
