Infant Feeding Support Worker

With a budget of around £365m, three hospitals and 5,500 staff, North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust provides hospital-based services to the population of Hartlepool, Stockton on Tees and parts of East Durham and Sedgefield as well as community, therapeutic and screening to a wider population across Durham and Teesside.

Working under the direction of the Infant Feeding Coordinator and Antenatal Postnatal Ward Matron the post holder will be responsible for the provision of breastfeeding promotion to prospective and new parents to increase the initiation and duration of breastfeeding for those mothers for whom breastfeeding is their preferred method. 

Main duties of the job

To promote and support healthy, safe and effective infant feeding for North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation trust.

Provide one to one support to both in the delivery suite and postnatal ward for parents who choose to breastfeed to encourage mothers to breastfeed for longer.

Provide on-site learning and support for staff when providing infant feeding support. 

Contribute to the promotion of a positive breastfeeding culture, working with partner agencies to increase awareness. Undertake parent infant feeding audits to support with the UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative.

To attend and promote events in support of Breastfeeding to represent the service.

 Provide support to the Infant Feeding Coordinator for key infant feeding initiatives including the UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative. Support and supplement maternity support worker role when required during times of high workload.

Person specification

Essential

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of appropriate infant feeding training
  • GCSE equivalent in English and Maths.
  • NVQ Level 3 in a health-related subject.
  • Evidence of support breastfeeding mothers over a 12 month period.
  • Experience of working in partnership with parents/families and other health and social care services
Desirable criteria
  • Teaching qualification.
  • Experience in facilitating learning for others.
  • Experience in audit.
