With a budget of around £365m, three hospitals and 5,500 staff, North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust provides hospital-based services to the population of Hartlepool, Stockton on Tees and parts of East Durham and Sedgefield as well as community, therapeutic and screening to a wider population across Durham and Teesside.

Job overview

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Physician in Acute and Respiratory  Medicine at the North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust. The successful applicant will join the exciting and enthusiastic acute and respiratory teams to provide clinical sessions within the Department of Emergency Care and Respiratory Medicine and contribute to the General Internal Medicine on-call services

The appointee will join a well established team of consultants and juniors covering the Acute Medical take, with daytime weekly sessional input to the acute medical unit and a commitment to the general medical rota; 1 in 6 weekends and 1 in 12 Physician of the week daytime cover. This will form part of the overall job plan and carry a 3% availability supplement. There are separate rotas for GI bleeding and Stroke. There is a sample weekly timetable given for guidance.

The respiratory component will be outpatient based with involvement with the existing community respiratory teams and virtual ward.

The appointee will be expected to take part in local postgraduate education activities (journal club, audit, clinical case presentation and teaching).

This is a new post based within the University Hospital of North Tees.  Office accommodation and secretarial support will be provided as will computer/internet access

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical

 ·       To assist in the provision of the medical specialties, in the delivery of care to those patients cared for on EAU and the Assessment area.

·       To provide outpatient based care for patients within the Lung Health department, for both new and routine review patients.

·       To provide clinical leadership for the development of the Respiratory Virtual Ward.

·       Take responsibility for own actions and decisions within the empowerment limits agreed by the Acute and Respiratory Consultant Teams and Clinical Director.

·       Contribute to the development of services and staff, participating in teaching of medical undergraduate and doctors in training.

·       Contribute to the departmental audit, research and patient safety and quality agenda.

·       Perform any other duties that considered necessary for the efficient working of the service and mutually agreed to be relevant to the post as the pattern of service evolves.

·       Required to cover for colleagues during normal periods of leave.

·       Professional supervision and management of junior medical staff.

The remainder of the appointee's professional time will be deployed flexibly on other clinical duties, administration, teaching, research, clinical audit etc.

 

In addition, the post holder will be expected to contribute to the achievement of the Trust’s Strategic Objectives.

 

 

 

Quality and Patient Safety / Audit

 

The post holder will take an active role in the quality and patient safety practices. There is a weekly Quality and Patient Safety meeting and the Clinical Effectiveness Unit provides an active and very useful role in audit.  The Trust has established weekly Safety Panel Meeting with monthly Audit and Clinical Effectiveness and Safety and Quality Standard meetings.

 

In addition, the post holder will be expected to:

 

·         Be committed to maintaining a high quality of services to patients, with particular regard to high levels of patient safety, by continual development of practice in the light of research evidence and by audit based against relevant standards.

·            Engage in relevant Quality Improvement projects

·         Be aware of, and comply with, all Trust infection prevention and control policies, to include hand hygiene, personal hygiene, environmental and food hygiene. 

·     To undertake annual training / updates in infection prevention and control.

·            Prepare for and undertake the protective interventions that he/she is responsible for in a manner that is consistent with evidence based practice and maintaining patient safety.

·   Implement of Trust Risk Management strategy and understand implications of same within area of work

·            'Comply with Blood Transfusion policy to ensure a safe service is provided to patients'

 

 

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • GMC Registration
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • CCT (or equivalent) in chosen medical specialty (within 6 months)
  • CCT (or equivalent) in GIM / Acute Medicine / Respiratory Medicine
Desirable criteria
  • Ultrasound accreditation
  • Diploma level qualification in a specialty

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Clinical skills in Acute or Respiratory Medicine equivalent to level 2 of Acute Medicine curriculum
  • Clinical audit experience
  • Experience in patient safety initiatives
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in dealing with "acute take" in the UK at consultant level
  • Intensive Care Unit experience
  • Experience in service improvement
