Macmillan Lung Cancer Nurse Specialist/Pleural Nurse

With a budget of around £365m, three hospitals and 5,500 staff, North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust provides hospital-based services to the population of Hartlepool, Stockton on Tees and parts of East Durham and Sedgefield as well as community, therapeutic and screening to a wider population across Durham and Teesside.

Job overview

The post holder will contribute to the continued development of the nursing service provision for lung cancer patients to ensure a high standard of evidence based practice.  To act autonomously as circumstances demand, balancing such autonomy with the principles of true patient centred multi-disciplinary care.  You will work as a member of the Macmillan Lung Cancer Nursing team acting as a key worker in the case management of suspected lung cancer patients from their first point of contact with the lung cancer team, through the investigative and diagnostic pathway and into the treatment/management phase of the disease.

You will plan and implement nurse led clinics for patients with malignant or cryptogenic pleural effusions. You will manage the review patients with IPC drains monitor the drain function and remove sutures where necessary

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Communications and Relationships

To communicate effectively with all members of the multi agency team in order to promote positive working relationships within both primary and secondary care.

Communication of highly emotive and sensitive information to patients and their relatives using developed interpersonal/communication skills to ensure that all acceptance barriers are overcome.

 Maintain effective communication pathways between the MDT, primary care, Cancer Centre and other secondary and tertiary care settings.

 Provide patient-focused advice and the nursing perspective to all members of the MDT.

 

Analytical and Judgement Skills

Analysis and interpretation of complex clinical situations resulting in effective communication within the MDT, maximising each member’s input into clinical decision making. 

Promote the lung cancer team as an example of good practice and share such practice with other lung cancer and site specific teams.

Provide expert knowledge of lung cancer and its management leading to the accurate assessment and logical planning/implementation of patient-centred care

 Contribute to the Lung Cancer Peer Review process.

 Actively take part in clinical audits.

 

Planning and Organisational Skills

Co-ordinate complex case management, adjusting plans or strategies as necessary thus maintaining patient centred care.

Maintain accurate information for the lung cancer databases.

You will be expected to see patients in clinics and walk to other clinical areas

Patient/Client care

In specific circumstances, to undertake the responsibility for informing patients and relatives of a diagnosis of terminal illness in highly distressing and emotional situations.

 To act as an expert source of knowledge, to support Health Care professional in the management of lung cancer patients.

 To act as a highly developed specialist source of knowledge of nursing management of lung cancer patients which has been acquired through degree and postgraduate specialist training underpinned by relevant practical experience and theoretical knowledge.

 Hold nurse led review clinics of patients with pleural effusions and IPC drains.

 Work towards nurse led clinics for patients requiring IPC talc

 Act as a point of contact for patients experiencing worsening symptoms.

 To ensure compliance with UKCC Code of Professional Conduct.

 

Policy and Service Development

Provide examples of the level of involvement in the implementation of policy and contribution to the decision making process within own department and other services

Actively participate, promote and contribute to specialised local and national groups such as the North of England Lung Cancer Nurses Group

Ensure working practice conforms to local and national standards of care which are evidence based as per evolving research studies and therefore contribute to the Trust wide quality assurance programme

 

Management and Leadership

Ensure effective use of own time, balancing the roles of practitioner, facilitator, caseload manager and educator. 

There will be many more aspects to this role as a Nurse Specialist, you will be expected to be flexible and able to cope with the demands of the post.

 

Information Resources

Level of responsibility for paper based or electronic records and systems, responsibility for information systems bothy hardware and software plus the generation and creation of information such as statistical reports or formal minutes

 

Research and Development

Take responsibility for personal development and education and the development of a Personal Development Plan.

Providing patient advocacy throughout the lung cancer pathway, extending such advocacy as a cornerstone of policy/protocol development.

Contribute to the development of research based practice for the lung cancer service.

Implement relevant specialist training programmes to support innovations and development of nursing practice.

Contribute to audit of patient satisfaction and participate in research studies and clinical trials within the field of lung cancer.

Influence, contribute to and implement the policies and procedures relevant to the development of the lung cancer service which impacts upon associated services and disciplines.

Working autonomously ensuring fulfilment of the health education, disease/treatment-related and psycho-social needs of patients and carers.

 The Trust is responsible for ensuring that the service provided to patients in its care meets the highest standard. Equally it is responsible for ensuring that staff do not abuse their official position for personal gain or to benefit their family or friends. The Trust’s standing orders require any officer to declare any interest, direct or indirect, with contracts involving the Trust. Staff are not allowed to further their private interests in the course of their NHS duties

9.          Infection Control

 The post-holder will ensure that (s)he follows the Trust’s hospital infection prevention and control (HIC) policies and procedures to protect patients, staff and visitors from healthcare-associated infections.  He or she will ensure that (s)he performs the correct hand hygiene procedures (as described in HIC 14), when carrying out clinical duties.  He or she will use aseptic technique and personal protective equipment in accordance with Trust policies.  All staff must challenge non-compliance with infection, prevention and control policies immediately and feedback through the appropriate line managers if required.

 Be aware of, and comply with, all Trust infection prevention and control policies, to include hand hygiene, personal hygiene, environmental and food hygiene. To undertake annual training/updates in infection prevention and control.

 

 To be accountable for implementation of The Health and Social Care Act 2008 Code of Practice on the prevention and control of infections and related guidance (2015) within own department/area of responsibility.

 Prepare for and undertake the protective interventions that he/she is responsible for in a manner that is consistent with evidence based practice and maintaining patient safety.

The Trust takes its statutory responsibilities to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and adults very seriously.  The Board of Directors expects all staff will identify with their manager their own responsibilities appropriate to their role in line with statute and guidance.  This will include accessing safeguarding training and may include seeking advice, support and supervision from the trust safeguarding children or safeguarding adult teams.  Where individuals and managers are unclear of those responsibilities they are expected to seek advice from the safeguarding teams.
