With a budget of around £365m, three hospitals and 5,500 staff, North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust provides hospital-based services to the population of Hartlepool, Stockton on Tees and parts of East Durham and Sedgefield as well as community, therapeutic and screening to a wider population across Durham and Teesside.

Job overview

The purpose of this innovative post is to allow a clinician to develop skills in paediatric emergency medicine to develop this as a subspecialty interest and gain skills useful for future paediatric or emergency medicine practice.

This post has been designed primarily for doctors who wish to gain further experience in emergency medicine and paediatrics with a view to pursuing a career in these specialties. The post is also suitable for any trainee looking to gain experience in paediatric emergency medicine.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will be in post for 12 months in the Children’s and Young People’s Emergency Department (CYPED) at University Hospital of North Tees.  The job would be mainly based in CYPED including on late shifts and weekends, there would also be time on the rota dedicated to Self Development Time which can be used for study (see below) or in the co-located Urgent Care Centre and the paediatric HDU at the neighbouring Trust to assess a range of severity of paediatric illness and injury.

Funding for two relevant paediatric emergency medicine courses (e.g. APLS/EPLS/ATLS) and the Diploma in Child Health (subject to eligibility) or Postgraduate Certificate on Paedatric Emergency Medicine from Edinburgh University will be made available.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post is to:

  • Assist in the provision of an effective paediatric emergency medicine service at the University Hospital of North Tees.
  • Provide emergency treatment to patients attending the paediatric emergency department and liaise with specialties.
  • Assist and guide junior doctors in emergency medicine and paediatrics working within CYPED.
  • To liaise with the shop floor/on-call consultant for clinical and administrative advice as appropriate.
  • Responsible for undertaking the administrative duties associated with the care of patients.
  • Work co-operatively with colleagues and to respect their contribution to patient care.
  • Ensure accurate recording of patient care episodes and outcomes as well as effective communication with nursing and professional staff in relation to patient care.
  • Undertake mandatory training as directed.
  • Any other duties which may be required from time to time.
  • The post holder has a general duty of care for their own health, safety and well being and that of work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital, in addition to any specific risk management or clinical governance accountabilities associated with the post.
  • Observe the rules, policies, procedures and standards of North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust together with all relevant statutory and professional obligations.

Essential and Desirable

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • APLS/EPLS
  • Full GMC Registration with licence to practice
  • MBBMRCEM/MRPCH
  • Ability to gain the Trust and confidence of colleagues and patients.
  • MBBS or equivalent (1) APLS/EPLS (1) Full GMC Registration with licence to practice (1) MRCEM/MRPCH (1) Ability to gain theCompetent in all relevant IT packages, including Microsoft and PACS.
  • Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team with appropriate inter-personal skills for effective team working.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Evidence of the ability to communicate with patients, colleagues and staff at all levels.
Desirable criteria
  • NLS
  • 12 months experience working for the NHS
  • Ability to motivate and teach junior medical and nursing staff.
  • Ability to lead, direct and delegate tasks appropriately
