Job overview

This is an exciting new opportunity to recruit a full or part time Consultant in Pain Medicine, to provide all medical aspects of pain management in Dorset Pain Management Service (DPMS).

This role allows the successful candidate to work flexibly as part of our team and support the wider multi-disciplinary team using our biopsychosocial approach. This well-established model enables people living with persistent pain to lead meaningful lives which has been demonstrated by our continuous assessment of outcome measures and patient feedback. 

The DPMS has a high expectation of continuous service development which is co-produced with our Experts by Experience. Current examples of service developments include interconnected pathways with Dorset MSK services, acute hospital partners and increasing efficiency for procedure in community hospitals.

Main duties of the job

The Dorset Pain Management Service (DPMS) sits within Specialist Services, as part of the Integrated Community Services .

Our team consists of 40 individuals, including a variety of highly skilled clinicians, such as Pain Consultants, Nurses, Physiotherapists, Psychologists, Pharmacist and Occupational Therapists, Mental Health Nurses, ably supported by our Assistants, Admin staff, Managers and Commissioners.

Qualifications / Training

Essential criteria
  • General medical Qualification e.g. MBBS, or equivalent and hold a Licence to Practise.
  • Membership of the Royal College of Anaesthetics or recognised equivalent in any other country.
Desirable criteria
  • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management
  • Additional clinical qualification

Eligibility

Essential criteria
  • Must be in possession or within 6 months of possession of a CCT in Anaesthetics.

Clinical Skills, Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Excellent knowledge in specialty
  • Evidence of effective multidisciplinary team involvement.
  • Excellent clinical skills using bio-psycho-social perspective and wider medical knowledge.
  • Make decisions based on evidence and experience including contribution of others.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Desirable criteria
  • Teaching Experience
  • Wide range of specialist and sub-specialist experience relevant to post within the NHS or comparable service.

Essential criteria
  • To have an understanding of own strengths and weaknesses and how these attributes affect professional functioning
  • To have an understanding of the stresses involved in being a consultant in pai medicine and how to manage these appropriately.

Supervision of Junior medical Staff

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of requirements for supervision and appraisal of junior medical staff.
  • Approved educational supervisor training

Research and Audit

Essential criteria
  • Experience of carrying out an audit project
  • Experience or involvement in a research project and publication
  • Ability to supervisor junior medical staff and/or other staff from the MDT to undertake research projects
Desirable criteria
  • Published audit project
  • Ability to critically appraise published research
