Job overview

The Purbeck Ward team are known for their welcoming nature, they are enthusiastic and work incredibly hard to ensure that every patient receives the care they need and deserve. Purbeck is proud to support the FERF initiative, this is favourable event reporting and each month celebrates all the wonderful things that have been accomplished and the hard work and dedication that goes into working on a trauma ward.

The successful applicants must be a qualified nurse with experience working within the acute hospital setting. Applicants must have the ability to work well as a part of the multidisciplinary team as well as individually and be able to adapt to frequently changing situations.

Main duties of the job

Purbeck Ward is a GOLD accredited trauma unit, specialising in acute Orthopaedic trauma and working within the wider scope of the Wessex trauma network. The fast paced and unpredictable nature of trauma nursing, in turn with its success in achieving good patient outcomes in a friendly, supportive ward environment are positives which we celebrate as a team.

Successful applicants will be supported to complete their Level 1 Adult Ward Nursing for the Major Trauma Patient competencies as well as attend TCAR training and the trusts Orthopaedic Nursing Study day. We also offer a wide range of educational opportunities at Dorset County Hospital which applicants will be encourages to attend. 

The Orthopaedic unit provides an ideal environment for successful applicants to learn about the complex and rewarding nature of Orthopaedic nursing, both trauma and elective. We care for predominantly Orthopaedics; however, we also cater at times for outliers of other surgical and medical specialties.

The successful applicants will be able to demonstrate an ability to provide high quality, safe nursing care which is driven by patient experience and evidence-based best practice.

Safe and timely discharge planning is an essential aspect of this role, which is paramount to promoting effective utilisation of the beds on the unit.

  • Registered Nurse.
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of CPD.

Knowledge and Experiance

Essential criteria
  • Acute hospital experience preferred.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of accountability.
Desirable criteria
  • Demonstrate an understanding of confidentiality.
  • Understanding of clinical governance and its requirements.
  • Understanding of professional nursing issues.
  • Surgical experience desirable

  • Evidence of ability to practice as competent practitioner
