Applications are invited for this exciting post to provide specialist respiratory care to patients with or suspected lung cancer. It is an opportunity to develop further advanced skills, to work autonomously and develop educationally. This role is an integral part of the Lung Cancer Team at DCH.

The post holder will join the existing lung cancer team, which includes the team lead and ACP, as well as the 3 other CNS’s and a band 4 support worker. The team works closely with the dedicated lung cancer multi-disciplinary team within the Trust. This includes 5 Respiratory Consultants, 2 Oncology Consultants, 2 Radiologists and the Lung cancer MDT Navigator.

We provide holistic support throughout the whole cancer pathway including the initial investigations, diagnosis, and through treatments, and follow-up of patients, continuity of care and improving the quality of life for lung cancer patient group. To be actively involved in palliative care and ongoing support of patients approaching the end of life. A fundamental level of specialist knowledge of lung cancer and remaining up-to date with all relevant developments in these areas is essential.

The post requires excellent communication skills for liaising with a range of health professionals to provide further support for patients across primary and secondary care, and tertiary centres.

Work closely with the dedicated lung cancer multi-disciplinary team within the Trust and to be actively involved in the initial investigations, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of patients with lung cancer.

Providing holistic assessment of needs and implementation of patient centred care.

To work with other CNSs to help facilitate health and wellbeing programmes.

Liaising with tertiary centres and their appropriate staff   for patients undergoing investigations or treatment outside West Dorset.

Demonstrating a fundamental level of specialist knowledge of lung cancer and remaining up-to date with all relevant developments in these areas. 

To be actively involved in palliative care and ongoing support of patients approaching the end of life.

  • Recognised qualification in cancer care or respiratory nursing
  • Evidence of CPD
  • Teaching qualification

Knowledge & Experience

  • Significant and recent post registration experience.
  • Significant and recent experience in related speciality at previous grade.
  • Understanding of professional nursing issues.
  • Understanding of clinical governance and its requirements.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of confidentiality.
  • Evidence of an area of special interest.
  • Knowledge of clinical audit.
