This is an excellent opportunity for a future aspiring Director of Nursing/Chief Nurse and, as such, we are seeking inspirational forward thinking and innovative individuals with the credibility, foresight and ambition required for this role. This is a unique opportunity to join a new leadership structure at Dorset County Hospital, in our collaboration with Dorset Healthcare Trust, and under the direction of our Joint CNO. 

You must have an excellent track record of success at a senior level , together with experience of partnership working with external agencies. The  Deputy Director of Nursing and Quality will support the Director of Nursing in the delivery of the Trust's corporate, professional and operational leadership responsibilities. The post holder will work collaboratively with members of the Trust senior leadership team in the achievement of quality, workforce, financial and performance objectives with specific responsibility for clinical and quality governance.

The successful postholder will have significant experience relating to quality, patient safety and clinical governance. The Deputy Director will support the Director of Nursing in providing leadership, advice, supervision and support to Nurses, Midwives, AHPs and Clinical Professionals throughout the Trust, ensuring that high quality clinical practice is integrated and embedded into all patient services.

The Deputy Director is responsible for supporting the Joint CNO and Director of Nursing in the development and delivery of the Strategy for Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professionals.

This includes the development of leadership potential and capacity across the Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professionals to drive and deliver consistent improvement in quality and safety, ensuring we continue to deliver outstanding care to our patients and their families.

Reporting directly to the Director of Nursing, the post holder will maintain and provide assurance on clinical governance systems and processes, Quality Commission (CQC) standards, clinical policy, workforce strategy, clinical quality and safety, patient experience, complaint resolution and PSIRF.

The post holder will deputise across the full range of the Director of Nursing portfolio as required and work with Heads of Nursing and wider Clinical and Allied Health Professionals to meet regulatory requirements and to promote the highest standards of Nursing, Midwifery and AHP care.

Education / Qualifications

  • Professional qualification and professional registration
  • Degree in Nursing or health related subject
  • Master’s Degree or equivalent level of experience
  • Evidence of continuous professional and personal development

Training

  • Evidence of recent and ongoing CPD development, and able to demonstrate advanced theoretical and practical knowledge in field, equivalent to a doctorate plus further specialist training.

Previous Experience

  • Extensive post-registration experience of which a substantial amount must be in service management
  • Knowledge and experience of leadership, development and quality
  • Significant understanding and experience of managing a complex service: including evidence of solving a range of complex operational and strategic problems
  • Extensive knowledge and experience of leading quality improvements, driving up standards and delivering efficiencies
  • Well-developed people management skills, with the ability to build and lead teams
  • Proven track record in a complex NHS organisation at a senior level including an acute Trust with influencing and negotiation skills and experience of working in a matrix environment.
  • A track record of success in delivering against national and local targets.
  • Proven ability in the formation and drafting and implementation of policy documents in line with national guidelines

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Highly developed communication skills (written and verbal); excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate information to senior managers, staff and external agencies. Excellent presentation and listening skills
  • Highly developed analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to triangulate complex information
  • Ability to act on own initiative with evidence of high level of autonomous decision making
  • The ability to motivate staff in all professions and at all levels to harness and nurture talent.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience of working within risk and governance frameworks
  • Highly developed clinical leadership and facilitation skills with political awareness
  • Able to demonstrate personal resilience and perseverance in challenging situations.
