Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post will be a part of the acute/general medical SHO tier at Dorset County Hospital, taking a share of the on-call duties and gaining exposure to a wide range of medical conditions while being fully supported by an appropriate junior and senior team. This includes full and equal access to educational and clinical supervision, as well as internal educational and training opportunities and funded study leave. Access to an ePortfolio will be offered. The successful applicant will be offered the opportunity to gain experience in the specialty of their choice, on an inpatient, outpatient or procedure basis (subject to specific choices, practicalities and availability).

A fellowship delivering and supporting medical education/training is also available, on a competitive basis (1 day/week, starting in August, for 1 year). This is arranged and funded by the education department. Application and interview for this post will take place after successful appointment to a GESTE position.

It is sometimes possible to arrange a 6-month placement in the A&E department as a complement to the GESTE appointment. This would be a separate post and is dependent on staffing requirements in both areas. If this is of interest, then enquiries would be welcome.

The Trust will make best attempts to place successful candidates in their chosen specialty or specialties, (identified as part of the interview/recruitment process). However, should there be multiple requests for the same specialty, which exceed the staffing/capacity requirements, the Trust will offer alternative options so that all appointees get the best experience possible.

On call: an equal share with the other SHOs, when you are ready for it (we have a well-established induction process with a graded increase in On Call exposure if needed).

The post has a core service purpose to support the safe delivery of care to the wards and acute unselected medical on call rota. It is recognised that access to specialty experience can be limited in an SHO’s earlier posts, and that wider experience can be valuable. Exposure to a specialty at SHO grade can help to round out a CV, meet portfolio requirements and clarify the level of interest in obtaining a training post in a specialty. It is intended that the post gives reliable and structured access to the specialty/specialties of choice for the successful candidate. The exact nature and timing of these sessions will be dependent upon the candidate’s preferences and the opportunities within the system, moderated by the service requirements.
