Job overview

A key pillar of delivering digital change within the NHS is the data science discipline. We are looking for a Machine Learning Engineer to develop our technical capabilities in deploying data science and machine learning models into production.

This role will be working in the Dorset Intelligence and Insight Service (DiiS) with the data science and data engineering functions and across our partners of the ICS; Acute, Community, Mental Health Trusts and primary care as well as our Local Authority teams.

This role provides the opportunity to be part of a change to the way we deliver health and care services in Dorset ICS; we need a greater focus on prevention, reducing health inequalities by providing equitable access, outcomes, and experience, joining up pathways for the benefit of the users and ensuring care is delivered by the right person, in the right place at the right time. Population Health Management is key to this approach; we need to ensure we have the correct data sets; use all the data we have available well and adopt a data driven approach to planning and delivery of health and care.

Main duties of the job

As an ML Engineer you will collaborate across functions and drive the adoption of best practice approaches from each discipline, training data scientists and data engineers on cloud infrastructure, containers, pipelines and deployment of models and software.

The ML engineer also will work closely with the data science team who work with a variety of clinicians and operational teams and use their detailed domain knowledge to develop solutions that create positive impact in the system and for the population.

As a technical leader, you will be instrumental in developing tools to scale out and deploy software applications. You will assist the head of data science in identifying, reviewing, and implementing tools and approaches that will contribute to Dorset’s transition to cutting-edge data science, automation & AI.

The ML Engineer will be able to apply knowledge of a variety of data science approaches and methodologies such as machine learning, statistics, forecasting, classification, simulation modelling, operational research, and NLP as appropriate.

You will also be able to demonstrate experience with building and maintaining data pipelines, manipulating data using SQL, building unit tests and an ability to use development tools like Devops, Docker and git.

Working for our organisation

Everyone in Dorset deserves to live well. That is why our NHS organisations, councils, public services and voluntary and community partners are working together as an Integrated Care System (ICS).

Working within the Dorset Intelligence & Insight Service (DiiS) and Dorset County Hospital (DCH) you will be instrumental in the design and delivery of Dorset's approach to population analytics.  You will be working collaboratively with system stakeholders ensuring that analytical programme plans are developed, maintained, and delivered.

At Dorset County Hospital (DCH) we aspire to providing outstanding care for people in ways which matter to them. Our trust strategy is focussed on three strategic goals: People, Place, and Partnership. It signals our intention to truly value our staff. Our people are our most important asset, and we want them to feel valued, welcomed, respected, they belong and matter. We recognise the link between high levels of staff satisfaction and improving patient experience and outcomes.

We are a Trust that celebrates diversity, and we are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees. Dorset County Hospital has a number of employees from overseas delivering high quality services and we recognise the value of diversity in leadership. We would welcome applications from people in groups which are under-represented at Board level.
