Specialist Radiographer: Mammographer

Job overview

The multi skilled breast team based at Torbay Hospital are looking to appoint an enthusiastic and motivated Radiographer with a Post-graduate Award in Mammography or equivalent. Mammography training would be considered for a Radiographer (diagnostic or therapeutic) who wishes to train.

The Breast Care Unit provides both screening and symptomatic services to the community in and around Torbay and South Devon. The NHS Breast Screening Service covers the South Devon area with a population of 48,500 women and we are participating in the national randomised age extension trial. The symptomatic service provides imaging for approximately 5000 women per annum.

The Static Unit located at Torbay Hospital has two ultrasound rooms and two mammography rooms with Hologic equipment,  each with stereotactic attachments and a Bard Vacuum Assisted Biopsy Device.

We currently have a mobile screening van equipped with Hologic equipment that moves around the community. Ability to independently travel to and from the mobile unit is essential for this role.

We are a small, friendly radiographic team who actively supports CPD and encourages regular involvement in training and audit.

Main duties of the job

  • Work clinically, both in the Screening and Symptomatic services, undertaking high quality mammographic imaging in the static and mobile units
  • Work within well motivated multidisciplinary team.
  • Work to high standards of care and well-defined national targets as set by NHSBSP and Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust.
  • Provide high quality care and support to service user throughout their treatment journey
  • Responsibility for own clinical skills to work independently making autonomous decisions
  • Supervise and share of knowledge with other health professionals and trainees
  • Undertake relevant CPD activities to continually update and develop:
    • reflective practice
    • Research and development studies and integrate outcomes into improving own practice
    • Personal and collaborative audit 

Working for our organisation

The Breast Care Unit is located within the grounds of Torbay Hospital where the whole breast multi-disciplinary team are based. The small friendly team works collaboratively and consists of Surgeons and Clinicians, Radiologists and Radiography team, Nursing team and the Administration team.

As a member of the breast multidisciplinary team you will contribute in providing high quality patient focussed care and will have the opportunity to participate in the unit’s MDT, Audit, and Education meetings.

Qualifications and training

Essential criteria
  • • BSc in Radiography or DCR
  • • UK recognised post-graduate MSc modules in Mammography Practice or equivalent
  • • HCPC registration
  • • Member of the Society of Radiographers
Desirable criteria
  • • Counselling skills

Knowledge and experience

Essential criteria
  • • Practitioner under IR(ME)R (Ionising Radiation (medical exposure) Regulations)
  • • Excellent communication skills
  • • Experience of working within a multidisciplinary team
  • • Basic IT skills
  • • Knowledge of the NHS Breast Screening Service including an understanding of Quality Assurance and the significance to Breast Screening
  • • Knowledge of CRIS system
  • • Evidence of appropriate on-going professional development
