Psychological Therapist/High Intensity CBT Therapist ICU

An opportunity has arisen in the Intensive Care department at Torbay Hospital to recruit a Psychological Therapist/High Intensity CBT Therapist in ICU.

This is an exciting opportunity to support the development, delivery and evaluation of a high quality and effective ICU psychology service.  Working within the rehabilitation team, the role will entail providing staff support, teaching and training, as well as facilitating 1:1 and group supervision.

You will join a friendly, supportive rehabilitation team, with whom you will work closely, to provide short-term and evidence-based psychological therapies and interventions to inpatients, outpatients and their families/caregivers within the Intensive care unit. There will be an emphasis on the clinical assessment and treatment of patients in the ICU at high risk of psychological distress plus consultation with relatives/caregivers, as well as the multidisciplinary team (MDT).

The role is embedded in the ICU but there is collaboration with the Trust’s Clinical Health Psychology Service.

Main duties of the job

The role is embedded in the ICU but there is collaboration with the Trust’s Clinical Health Psychology Service, with opportunities for peer support, service development and evaluation, teaching, training, supervision, consultation, and preventative well-being approaches.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Post-graduate doctoral level training in Clinical Psychology .

A high-level ability to communicate effectively at both a written and oral level complex, highly technical and clinically sensitive information to 
clients, their families, carers and a wide range of lay and professional persons within and outside the NHS

Standard keyboard skills.

Driving to clinics.

Retaining and imparting large amounts of complex information.

Work pattern can be unpredictable.

Person specification

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • Post-graduate doctoral level training in Clinical Psychology OR An accredited Postgraduate Qualification in Counselling Psychology (a 3-year accredited Doctorate or the BPS Qualification in Counselling Psychology) Counselling Psychology. OR Post graduate diploma in Psychological Therapies (High Intensity CBT)
  • Eligibility for Chartered Clinical Psychologist or Counselling Psychologist status and registered as a Practitioner Psychologist with the HCPC. Or BABCP registered CBT therapist.
Desirable criteria
  • Additional training in multiple therapeutic models applicable to Clinical Health Psychology, e.g., ACT, EMDR.
  • Additional training/qualifications in supervision

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of models of psychopathology, trauma, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology.
  • A high-level ability to communicate effectively at both a written and oral level complex, highly technical and clinically sensitive information to clients, their families, carers and a wide range of lay and professional persons within and outside the NHS
  • Experience of delivering consultation, teaching and training to other professionals.
  • Ability to identify provide and promote appropriate means of support to carers and staff exposed to highly distressing situations
  • Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients with physical health problems in a hospital-based setting (inpatient/outpatient).
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in an ICU or other acute physical health inpatient setting.
  • Experience of working with multi-disciplinary teams in physical health settings.
  • Previous experience of working within Clinical Health Psychology or physical health settings.
