Job overview

We are seeking to appoint a highly motivated and qualified optometrist with an extended role in glaucoma to be a part of our Ophthalmology department at Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust.

Full time and part time applicants will be considered

Reports to: Head Orthoptist

Accountable to: Head Orthoptist;  and clinically the Consultant Ophthalmologist for Glaucoma 

This post is multi disciplinary  working alongside Ophthalmologists Optometrists, Orthoptists and Nurses  in the delivery of the glaucoma service. It will involve   the assessment  and management of  patients with varying complexity of glaucoma  and  assisting  in the delivery of both face to face and virtual glaucoma clinics,  making decisions and working  both autonomously ,alongside Consultant Ophthalmologists .

The possession of the Professional Higher Certificate in glaucoma would be preferred  as well as an Independent Prescribing qualification, or working towards this would be an advantage .

 

Main duties of the job

 

  • To work in a multidisciplinary environment alongside optometrists, nurses, specialist orthoptists and ophthalmologists in the delivery of the glaucoma service.
  • To assess and manage patients with varying complexity of glaucoma.
  • To communicate effectively with patients and medical professionals to provide a high quality, co-ordinated service.
  • To assist in the delivery of both face to face and virtual glaucoma clinics.
  • To be able to make decisions and work both autonomously and alongside Consultant Ophthalmologists in the glaucoma service.
  • Possession of the Professional Higher Certificate in glaucoma would be preferred.
  • An independent prescribing qualification, or working towards this, would also be desirable.

This is a great opportunity to join our busy team. The Ophthalmology Department is based at Torbay District General Hospital and holds clinics in community settings. We currently have 12 Consultant Ophthalmologists., 4 Optometrists and 8 Orthoptists plus nurses within the department. The role will involve working in a multidisciplinary team or as a singlehanded Autonomous practitioner if required.

You must therefore have a current Optometry Qualification, recognised by the GOC, be registered with the GOC and preferably the hold a Higher Glaucoma qualification.

You should be flexible and have good communication and people skills as you will meet professionals from multi-disciplinary backgrounds and people in a clinical situation of all ages with a variety of problems and abilities.

This position is ideal for an Optometrist looking to gain experience In secondary care, it is an excellent opportunity to develop your Optometric skills, having a direct impact on the management of patients with glaucoma in a forward thinking and progressive department.

The department provides Clinical placement for Optometry Students, pre-registration Optometrists, medical students and Orthoptic students.
