Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity to support the Devon Sexual Health Service as a Band 8a Clinical Nurse Manager in Torbay.

 

This is a fixed term role or could alternatively be supported as a secondment. 

The service is looking for someone is who is highly motivated and who can provide professional leadership to the team.

You will provide senior nurse management and clinical leadership in all aspects of service delivery for the integrated sexual health service, including HIV care and the pregnancy advisory service. With other clinical leads, will assist in the development and updating of clinical policies, protocols, patient group directions and competencies and provide a quality evidence based service.

Working as the integrated service nurse lead for the management team with respect to service improvement and development, business planning and service delivery ensuring the achievement of local and national Key Performance Indicators (KPI) targets.

 

Main duties of the job

  • Lead and participate in nurse-led clinics, making decisions based on expert knowledge.
  • Act as a role model, promoting advanced nursing practice, partake in developing clinical guidance to ensure that high standards of care are given to all patients.
  • Promote good practice and adapt a holistic approach to patient care at all times.
  • At all times act as advocate for patients and relatives, support them through the decision making process regarding care options.
  • Ability to provide in advanced clinical information advice and treatments to patients in sexual health.
  • Respect patients’ needs for privacy and dignity providing leadership to ensure this is addressed at all times across the service.
  • Work fully within the Clinical Governance Framework for the service and Trust including risk management, audit and evaluation at senior levels.
  • Aware of need for confidentiality and need to respect patient wishes.
  • Maintains consultation skills and is aware of particular issues relating to service provision to under 18 year olds including safeguarding.
  • Provide clinical specialist advice for healthcare professions and patients.
  • Contribute to health promotion and raising health awareness with patients and relatives and other health professionals.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Responsible for monitoring the delivery of clinical supervision and supporting clinical supervisors.
  • Responsible for health and safety, risk management, infection control, ensuring the development of link nurses/champions as appropriate.
  • Ensures the development of processes i.e. competencies for induction and orientation of newly appointed staff.
  • Monitors Achievement Reviews – identifies learning and development training and training needs of staff with the Practice Educator.
  • Responsible for selection, recruitment and retention of nursing and clinical support staff within the service.
  • Offers and supports career opportunities / secondment of staff within budgetary constraints.
  • Attends relevant care group, quality, governance and finance meetings.
  • Partakes in training/education of medical students/post graduate/and pre-registration students as required.
  • Ensures standardisation of competency based training of all staff.
  • Monitoring and authorisation of study leave, annual leave and similar requests.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Registered Practitioner i.e RN, RM, or other. Post registration qualification in GU Medicine/Contraception
  • Evidence of continuing professional development (CPD) at degree level relevant to specific role
  • Teaching qualification
  • Recognised managerial/leadership qualification or willingness to undertake.
Desirable criteria
  • Post registration training to Masters level or equivalent knowledge and experience in sexual health
  • Non-medical prescriber

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of current issues regarding sexual health
  • In-depth knowledge of all sexually transmitted infections
  • Knowledge and experience of health promotion methods as they relate to sexual health
  • Excellent interpersonal skills in communication, negotiation and diplomacy
Desirable criteria
  • Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Health Diploma (FSRH) or willingness to work toward qualification.
  • Experience of working with HIV cohorts
