Join our emergency services as a Paediatric Practice Educator to act as a role model and expert practitioner, delivering  safe quality standards to our patients on a 34.5 hours per week permanent contract.

Upon joining us, you will work strategically and operationally within the education team to promote the teaching, training and on-going development of Nursing staff including  Healthcare Assistants (HCA’s) ensuring continuing personal, professional and practice development is an active process within the Children’s Emergency Department.

Main duties of the job

  • With the Paediatric education lead, ED Matron and Paediatric lead Nurse, identify the training needs of the Paediatric nursing staff in relation to knowledge and competence in providing optimum evidence-based practice
  • To facilitate delivery of the Education Pathway outlined for Adult nurses to ensure they gain confidence and competence of working within the children’s Emergency Department
  • Develop and deliver a schedule of clinical education and training that ensures that the standards of nursing care are at high level and reflects best practice complying with local and National policies
  • Plan, implement and record clinical assessments as required, working alongside staff to develop their competencies
  • Provide training and support to mentors in supporting learners within practice

Working for our organisation

This is an exciting time for the Children’s Emergency Department at Torbay Hospital. Within our growing department we have now been given funding for a Paediatric Practice Educator to Join the Education team.

The Children’s area is based within the main Emergency Department and Consists of 5 cubicles and a dedicated space in resus. There are plans in place commencing 2023 to expand this area due to our growing numbers of attendances. The service is dedicated to providing the highest standards of safe and effective care to sick children and their families in an appropriately child friendly environment by highly skilled staff

We recognise the importance of progression and nurturing our own staff, this will start with a supernumerary induction programme and ongoing professional development tailored to your individual learning needs and supported by our Lead practice educator

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To support the implementation of a directorate wide Nursing education strategy that links to the workforce strategy and the Divisional strategic plan
  • To be an expert practitioner, demonstrating advanced communication and nursing skills, using expert knowledge and decision-making skills in Children’s Nursing
  • To provide excellent visible clinical leadership and develop support mechanisms for sharing good practice across Children’s Services
  • Support the Paediatric senior team when involved with capability or performance management to ensure that they are able to undertake their role in regular education and assessment of that staff member
  • To work effectively as part of the Paediatric Education team to promote joint training, where appropriate, in pursuit of clinical excellence within the Trust
  • To be flexible in the approach to the clinical area and provide cover for any area specified within your clinical competence
  • The post holder will be expected to work a minimum of 30% clinically to maintain competency. They will also be expected to work clinically alongside nursing staff supporting their learning needs as identified
  • Work strategically and operationally with the Divisional team in ensuring that Clinical Policies, Procedures, Guidelines and Educational Programmes meet the needs of the Division
  • Act as a Paediatric link for Higher Educational Institutions, link tutors and students requiring clinical placements within the Paediatric speciality
  • Act as a resource person, providing accurate information, advice and support in education and innovation within Paediatric care
  • Be aware of the Trust’s safeguarding policies and procedures and demonstrate the ability to be able to and enable others to raise concerns and work closely with the Trust’s safeguarding team and other agencies to protect children
  • Link with governance and Paediatric lead nurse looking at incidents and patient feedback to ensure dissemination of learning can take place

  • NMC Qualification
  • Evidence of ongoing Professional Development
  • IT Skills
  • Significant Experience at Band 6 within a Paediatric Setting
  • Experience of teaching both formally and informally in clinical practice
Desirable criteria
  • Recognised teaching and assessing qualification
  • Holds a post graduate diploma degree in relevant healthcare subject
  • Sign off mentor
  • APLS
  • Experience in audit and research-based nursing practice
