Job overview

Care to join us as an experienced Independent Prescriber working within the Substance Misuse field?

Based at Shrublands House,  you will have the autonomy to prescribe medication, including controlled drugs, for service users in accordance with policy, best practices, evidence-based guidelines, and within your scope of practice. 

You will also be responsible for assessing, diagnosing, and managing treatment interventions for service users with alcohol and drug dependency issues. 

As an Independent Nurse Prescriber you will promote healthy lifestyles and provide ongoing support for community alcohol detoxes.

Please note this advert is restricted to candidates within the Drug and Alcohol team, as this is specialist service which requires existing experience, knowledge and applicants must hold the following qualifications:

  • Registered Nurse with a current and valid NMC Pin
  • Masters (Level 7 or equivalent Independent/Supplementary Prescriber)

Main duties of the job

  • Specialist prescribing of controlled drugs to a high risk cohort of individuals who may be using illicit drugs and medications on a daily basis
  • Provide assessment, diagnosis and ongoing management and evaluation of treatment interventions for service users with alcohol and drug dependency issues
  • Independently prescribe medication, including controlled drugs, for service users in line with policy, best practice, the evidence base and within scope of practice, ensuring cost effectiveness
  • Provide harm reduction support, information and advice to service users in relation to substance misuse, including advice on safer sex and safer drug use to ensure that drug users and their partners reduce the risk of viral transmission
  • Work closely with recovery workers to ensure that the plan for clinical interventions aligns with Recovery Plans for service users, working with or referring on to other agencies as appropriate. In addition, conduct regular case management reviews with service users and contribute to clinical and multidisciplinary reviews
  • Maintain up-to-date clinical records and prescribing plans for service users in treatment, consistent with legislation, policies and procedures
  • Share relevant information within the context of information sharing policies and protocols, with regard to risk minimisation and prevention of public harm
  • Record service user statistics in accordance with policy and guidelines

  • Assess and identify service users appropriate for inpatient detoxification
  • To have responsibility for the coordination of the generation of continuous prescriptions for Controlled Drugs across the whole of the Torbay Primary Care Drug Service
