50/50 Trust Fellow: General Surgery

Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust has a Trust Fellow posts to support education, quality improvement and the clinical service within General Surgery with impact also across the wider Trust. This 12-month, fixed-term Trust Fellow post involve 50% clinical work and 50% education, and also have the option of a funded postgraduate certificate in education, simulation, leadership and management or similar (maximum £3500 course fees funded per enrolee).
Post holder will be allocated a Clinical and Educational Supervisor, with regular meetings to support their clinical practice and their educational professional development.

Post holder will deliver undergraduate teaching on behalf of the Peninsula Medical School and/or University of Exeter Medical School academic day and placement programmes. Trust Fellows will need to work closely with the other Trust Fellows and Academic F2s - as well as other academic and quality improvement roles across the Trust - in regards to organising education and teaching delivery, and project work coordination.
Priorities and learning objectives will be identified and agreed between each post holder and their educational supervisor and/or College Tutor as part of their induction and will take into account both the Trust and specialty objectives and priorities. Flexibility will be given to the non-clinical work depending on the interests and experience required of each individual post holder.
Less than full-time working is supported.

Main duties of the job - specifics of the non-clinical work
Post holders will teach medical students and foundation doctors in a formal and informal capacity. This includes contributing to the delivery of simulation training, journal clubs, specialty-specific teaching and on-the-ward teaching. Post holders will deliver teaching sessions within the year 5 undergraduate academic programmes, covering the topics of prescribing, foundation principles, communication skills and simulation training. Post holders will also have the opportunity to undertake projects in quality improvement, research and service development, aiming to improve training, patient care, staff workload and patient safety within:
- Undergraduate education;
- Postgraduate education;
- Digital research;
- Immersive VR technologies;
- Simulation teaching/training.
There is also the opportunity to design, develop and deliver extra curricula teaching opportunities for all junior doctors within the Trust as part of the local, non-core teaching programme, in collaboration with the other Trust Fellows and Academic F2s
Main duties of the job - specifics of the clinical work
Posts will be ward-based or Emergency Department-based as acute generalists looking after patients. On-call requirements will vary depending on the specific clinical area and rota.
Main duties include:
- Supervise, monitor and assist the F1 doctor in the day-to-day management of inpatients where specialties have an attached F1;
- Liaise between nurses, F1 and F2 doctors, patients, relatives and senior medical staff;
- Attend and participate in ward rounds and multi-disciplinary rounds as timetabled;
- Completion of discharge summaries;
- Study for higher examination and maintain continued professional development (including membership exams where appropriate);
- Attend weekly educational and multidisciplinary sessions;
- Supervise medical students where appropriate;
- Co-operate with members of the personnel department when monitoring hours of work and other personnel issues;
- Attend induction in each new department;
- Support induction of new staff members;
- Comply with all local policies including dress code, annual and study leave.

- BMBS or equivalent medical qualification.
- Completed UK Foundation training but has not yet started Higher Specialist training.
- Full GMC Registration and License to Practice in the UK at the time of appointment, and in good standing with the GMC.
- ALS training or equivalent.
- Experience of working in the NHS.
- Experience in supporting students and doctors in training in clinical settings.
- Evidence of commitment to a career in medicine and within medical education.

- Evidence of a teaching qualification i.e. PG Certificate in Medical Education or commitment to postgraduate teaching qualificiation.

- Experience in Change Management/Quality Improvement projects.
- An appreciation of current issues in medical education.
- Excellent IT skills and understands the use of IT in education.
- Evidence of awareness of the importance of multidisciplinary teaching.
