Locally Employed Doctor - Orthogeriatric Medicine

NHS Medical & Dental: Core Trainee (CT1/2)

Job overview

As an LED you will have appropriate clinical responsibility for the care of patients delegated by the consultant to his/her charge. Co-responsibility for the proper functioning of the department, including supervision of more junior medical staff. Working within the multidisciplinary team. Co-ordinating appropriate medical, surgical, and allied disciplines concerned with patient care and communicating appropriately with general practitioners and community agencies.

Main duties of the job

This is an exciting position that will give a breadth of experience to many trainees, whether their future career lies in Medicine, General Practice, Emergency Medicine or potentially Anaesthetics with an interest in peri-operative medicine.

We are a busy trauma unit seeing 470 hip or femur fractures a year. Patient care is jointly provided by the Orthopaedic surgeons and the Orthogeriatric consultants. In addition, the orthogeriatric medicine team provides medical care to peri-prosthetic fractures and the aim is to spread this joint care model to include all frail older trauma patients.

You will become part of the orthogeriatric medicine team consisting of a Consultant Orthogeriatrician, a Physician Associate (PA), a specialist Surgical Care Practitioner (SCP), and the orthogeriatric medicine locally employed doctor (this post), alongside the Orthopaedic junior team.

The orthogeriatric medicine team is fully integrated with the orthopaedic team and the orthopaedic MDT, starting the working day in the trauma meeting Monday-Friday at 08:00 with the orthopaedic surgeons and it is essential that the post-holder is able to commit to attending these meetings.

Working for our organisation

The HOP Team currently have 9.9 WTE Consultants (including 1 vacancy) plus a Speciality GP and a Specialty Doctor. We work very closely with our colleagues in stroke and in addition to Totnes Hospital we support 3 acute wards, a Frailty SDEC, Frailty Virtual Ward as well as delivering and Orthogeriatrics service and host the Parkinson’s Disease service which we jointly run with the Neurology Team.

You will be part of the Healthcare of Older People department and we run a weekly teaching session on a Friday lunchtime that can offer training in geriatric care and a forum for you to provide a teaching session.

Your day to day decision making will be support by a middle grade and there will be a weekly consultant led ward round.

There may be opportunities for this post to gain experience in other areas of the service.
