Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to joint the Respiratory Physiotherapy Team within Torbay and Southern Devon healthcare NHS Foundation Trust delivering expert Respiratory Physiotherapy in Advanced practitioner Role (ACP). This post will work across the trust (acute and community) delivering advanced Practice in Respiratory Physiotherapy. The post holder will work clinically in the virtual ward, outpatient clinics, the community, and acute wards. The Candidate requires an Accredited ACP qualification or the ability to complete an accredited ACP qualification enabling them to work autonomously in the planning and delivery of care for this complex group of patients.

The post will work alongside the Acute Physiotherapy Team, community therapy and nursing teams, MDT and Respiratory consultants. The post will support the development of strategic leadership and clinical governance throughout the Physiotherapy Respiratory Pathways for patients within South Devon. The ACP role exercises independent judgement to assess, investigate, diagnose, plan, implement and evaluate the clinical care and management of patients with Respiratory conditions.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will and in accordance with the Trust Framework for Advanced Practice:

  • Work as a high-level practitioner with advanced clinical skills within an interdepartmental team to ensure that patients within their sphere of clinical expertise receive holistic, timely and high-quality clinical care.
  • Exercise advanced clinical expertise, levels of judgement, discretion and decision making in clinical care, whilst maintaining a professional portfolio that supports their scope of practice, in the field of airways clearance and the management of breathing pattern disorders

Leadership:

  • Work and provide leadership across the Respiratory Physiotherapy pathway, from first point of contact through the entire local clinical pathways.

This role will act in a trust wide leadership capacity to ensure evidenced based practice and delivery of respiratory physiotherapy is coordinated, efficient and fit for purpose. This will  include working with all Physiotherapy relevant respiratory pathways and wider MDT services including IC, Community therapy  stroke and neuro community nurses/matrons and linking to associated services provided through CFHD and DPT for support with Paediatric and Learning disability services

Working for our organisation

The Physiotherapy service and the respiratory medicine service work closely together providing support to patients with a variety of respiratory presentations across Torbay Hospital acute medical wards, respiratory outpatients, the virtual ward and community services including intermediate care and community Physiotherapy, paediatrics and work closely with other trust providers including Devon partnership trust. The virtual ward will enhance the connection between acute and community services, aiming to facilitate discharge and prevent unnecessary hospital admission.

This post will be based between the acute hospital physiotherapy department, outpatient services, the virtual ward and community teams. This may include working within patients usual or temporary residential dwellings

     ·     Diploma/degree in physiotherapy

  • Evidence of CPD maintained in a portfolio including attendance at recent postgraduate courses relevant to the respiratory clinical field, e.g. advanced airways clearance, Management of bronchiectasis, clinical skills training, student supervision training
  •  Knowledge of the relevant national and clinical guidelines, and experience of implementing these recommendations in practice
  • Ability to organize and prioritise workload for self and others
  • Proven ability of complex case management
  • Always acting as a role model
  • The use of highly developed therapeutic handling skills, manual techniques and facilitation of movement. To provide expert manual handling assessment, ergonomic education and advice on continuing management to patient and members of the multidisciplinary team/family/carers
  • The work pattern may be unpredictable and frequently interrupted e.g. responding to telephone communication from other members of the multidisciplinary team and acute unscheduled clinical circumstances during a working day
  • Imparting information concerning diagnosis and poor prognosis of physical recovery to patients and their relatives on a daily basis. This may involve informing patients that they may be unable to return to their previous functional level, or challenge beliefs about perceived level of disability
  •  Ability to be mobile to attend meetings/training across Torbay and Southern Devon

Qualifications and training

Essential criteria
  • Physiotherapy Degree
  • HCPC
Desirable criteria
  • MSC/ACP in respiratory Physiotherapy
  • Non medical prescribing

Knowledge and experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant experience as a Band 6 Respiratory Physiotherapist within the NHS
  • Demonstrates leadership experience
  • Evidence of advanced Respiratory Physiotherapy assessment treatment skills
Desirable criteria
  • Experience as a band 7 Respiratory Physiotherapist
