This is an exciting time to join our Acute Medicine team. There is a dedicated two storey Acute Medical Unit adjacent to the Emergency Department and Outpatient facilities. The unit provides higher acuity assessment, intervention and SDEC, including for older people identified as living with frailty. The team comprises of 4.25 WTE consultants, 1 Registrar, 1 Speciality Doctors and 3 Physician Associates. We are seeking to recruit a proactive, forward thinking consultants to join our friendly and innovative team who is committed to providing the very highest standards of care.

Main duties of the job

The Acute Medicine department at Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust is a dynamic department known for taking a hands-on role in service development, quality improvement, education and training. Acute Medicine benefits from strong departmental and senior leadership and has easy working relationships with the hospital executive team through its work in development of our acute services.

Acute Medicine is well known as a nurturing and supportive department both for senior medical staff and for doctors in training. We work collaboratively with the well-established multidisciplinary teams of nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and discharge co-ordinators on our Emergency Assessment Unit and Acute Medical Unit, all of which maintain a strong culture of safety and professionalism.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Patient safety, dignity and care are the highest priority and at the centre of all that we do.

To provide high quality Consultant delivered care to patients, including clinical leadership and supervision of junior medical staff, ensuring the highest standards of clinical care are provided to all patients attending the hospital.

To be proactive in ensuring that all patients receive rapid assessment, treatment and clinical decision making, whilst ensuring our standard to deliver safe quality and performance are delivered and sustained.

To provide teaching and training at undergraduate and postgraduate level and supervised and train the juniors and specialty doctors.  To be proactive in the Department’s clinical governance agenda and take on leadership roles to support continuous learning and improvement, thereby abiding by the clinical and corporate governance policies of the Trust.

To liaise with clinicians and managers within and outside the Department to address any issues arising that may affect the services.

To participate in relevant audit and quality assurance processes. 

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

Junior staff:  Recruitment, appointment and educational supervision including educational contracts, regular appraisal, organisation of study leave, annual leave and rotas.

Budget:  Work collaboratively with the Operational Manager, Associate Medical Director & Associate Director of Operations to manage services within allocated resource.

Communication:  This will include the responsibility for and arrangement of communication and liaison with all other medical and service departments within the Trust and other Trusts.

Teaching:  To have an active role in the junior doctor training programme.

Person specification

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC Registration (with licence to practice).
  • CCT Specialist Registration or will obtain within 6 months of interview date.
  • CESR.
  • Minimum of English Level 2 (GCSE grade C or equivalent), IELTS or graduate of a UK Medical School.
  • ATLS / APLS / ALS

Management & Admin Experience

Essential criteria
  • Effective specialist clinical service
  • Experience of Audit and Management
  • Evidence of involving patients in practice.
  • Evidence of innovative development and implementation of guidance.

Teaching Experience

Essential criteria
  • Proven ability to teach clinical skills within multi-disciplinary teams applying evidence based knowledge.
  • Evidence of relevant research, publications or presentations.
