Urology GIRFT Fellow

NHS Medical & Dental: Senior Clinical Fellow

This is a 12 month fellowship and the successful candidate will be part of a wider cohort of GIRFT fellows. You will have weekly/fortnightly supervision meetings with GIRFT’s Academic Content Lead and have regular access to GIRFT’s national clinical lead for your specialty, Professor Tim Briggs (National Director of Clinical Improvement) and the wider GIRFT Academy team. You will have access to national datasets curated by NHS England (including Hospital Episodes Statistics, Out-patients, Emergency Care and Theatres datasets). We will support you to write peer-reviewed research publications, presentations for conferences and guidelines/recommendations as appropriate.  Taught elements will include sessions on quality improvement methodology, leadership, behavioural change, action learning sets, statistics, academic publication, and public engagement.  Peer support from other fellows is an important component of the fellowship.

The role will be split across the week with 3 days dedicated to GIRFT research in sustainability in Urology services. 

 The remaining two days will be clinical work with the service including  performing diagnostic procedures and clinics, same day emergency care and supporting junior urology staff as part of a wider urology clinical team including post grad urology trainees, doctors assistant and surgical care practitioners.  There may be some requirement to cover absence colleagues as required.

  • • Ability to cope with stressful situations and take on responsibility • Good communication, organisational and interpersonal skills • Punctual • Ability to attend range of problems both emergency and elective within urology • Ability to take shared responsibility for clinical care of patients • Ability to manage acute urology admissions • Understanding of principles of audit, research and evidence-based medicine • Willing to undertake research projects
