Job overview

We are looking to recruit a  specialist SQL Database Administrator for the University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust (UHPNT) and D&I supported organisation.  The successful candidate will provide expert management of the UHP SQL environment, lead in investigations and improvements, and collaborate with developers, system administrators, and other stakeholders to ensure efficient and effective use of database resources.

Primarily remote working with some on site duties as and when required.

***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as Priority and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***

Main duties of the job

To create and manage MS databases including Table Management, procedures, views, indexes, triggers, and replication. 

Working with database software to find ways to store, organise, and manage data.  

Run complex database queries to extract data for audit and performance monitoring. 

Proactive troubleshooting and optimising using available monitoring tools.  

Designing maintenance procedures and putting them into operation. 

Ensuring that databases meet user requirements. 

Liaising with 3rd parties' programmers & DBA’s, applications/operational staff, IT project managers and other technical staff.  

Create and maintain existing SQL jobs. Plus, archiving data.  

Support the design and build of data pipelines from clinical systems to our Data Warehouses. 

Support in the development of new ways to store and present data.  

Identify areas of operational risk in the day-to-day running of the SQL environment. Reporting of risks to the Systems Manager and Head of Technical Services. 

Collaborate with the Systems Manager and Head of Technical Services to develop and implement strategies and policies that align with the organisation's goals and objectives. This includes dealing with highly complex, sensitive, and contentious information.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

       To create and manage MS databases including Table Management, procedures, views, indexes, triggers, and replication.

       Working with database software to find ways to store, organise, and manage data. 

       Run complex database queries to extract data for audit and performance monitoring.

       Proactive troubleshooting and optimising using available monitoring tools.

       Work with Systems Operations Team to ensure that security updates are current, and that database access is approved and monitored.

       Helping with database design and development. This includes opportunities for automation.

       Designing maintenance procedures and putting them into operation.

       Ensuring that databases meet user requirements.

       Liaising with 3rd parties' programmers & DBA’s, applications/operational staff, IT project managers and other technical staff. 

       Defining objectives through consultation with staff at all levels.

       Testing and modifying databases to ensure that they operate reliably. This includes testing failovers and ensuring documentation around Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity are kept up to date.

       Create and maintain existing SQL jobs. Plus, archiving data. 

       Support the design and build of data pipelines from clinical systems to our Data Warehouses.

       Support in the development of new ways to store and present data. 

       Communicate between technical and non-technical stakeholders as well as facilitate discussions within a multidisciplinary team. 

       Keep abreast of best practice in data engineering across industry, research and Government and facilitating the adoption of standards. 

       Ensure that data is processed in accordance with policies and procedures. 

       Responsible for supporting senior and service management in the strategic planning within the department and audits. This includes meeting DSPT requirements.

 

TECHNICAL SUPPORT

       Using highly developed specialist knowledge, underpinned by theory and experience, to provide expert technical guidance and support to the Systems Teams in identifying and resolving complex infrastructure issues.

       Collaborate with the Systems Manager and Head of Technical Services to develop and implement strategies and policies that align with the organisation's goals and objectives. This includes dealing with highly complex, sensitive, and contentious information.

       Collaborate with the Systems Manager on a range of documentation; including but not limited to, business cases, infrastructure reviews, restructures, prioritisation work, and both internal and third-party audits. 

       Identifying and testing technical improvements and opportunities for automation and monitoring to optimise the infrastructure's performance.

       Knowledge of creating and updating replication subscriptions with new articles.

Person specification

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Graduate calibre professional with demonstrable experience supporting and managing enterprise scale SQL environments. Certification in managing and administering SQL Server Expert SQL server skills used in a critical operational environment.
  • Significant demonstrable experience of database administration and design in the delivery of a corporate system; including configuration of Availability Groups and clustering. Excellent scripting and replication knowledge.
  • Demonstrable experience of managing large-scale, complex SQL configurations and planning system upgrades/migrations/ refreshes including writing/review of high-level/low-level designs along with migration plans.
Desirable criteria
  • Professional qualification. or equivalent demonstrable experience. to Masters level.
  • Awareness: up to date with the NHS Programme for IT and other national directives. SQL Azure demonstrable experience.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent relevant demonstrable experience Technical courses specifically in the management, configuration, and support of SQL databases.
Desirable criteria
  • Masters Degree Specialist training and relevant study to Master’s degree or equivalent level Management/leadership qualifications

  • Ability to act on own initiative to solve highly complex technical problems within a short period, by looking at complex facts or situations; analysing, interpreting and comparing a range of available options.
