Job overview

To work in the Plastic Surgery Trauma clinic in a multi-disciplinary team to ensure all trauma patients receive high quality evidence based care.

  • To  undertaking assessment and treatment of patients with hand conditions who may have complex injuries, acute or chronic conditions.
  • Providing a specialist assessment for the triage of patients, listing for surgery or additional investigations, and post op care (ROS, simple wound care etc) and onward referral.
  • Requesting investigations (x-rays, MRI’s, CT’s ultrasound, etc.) and using the results of investigations to assist clinical diagnosis and appropriate management of patients.
  • Referring to other medical and health care professionals including listing for some surgical procedures.
  • Appropriate use of splints and splinting techniques.

Main duties of the job

  • To be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of own work, including the management of patients in your care.
  • To be responsible for maintaining accurate and comprehensive patient treatment records in line with Professional Body standards and local/Trust policy. To communicate appropriately with other disciplines (this might include meetings, report and letter writing)
  • To undertake a comprehensive assessment of patients including those with diverse or complex presentations/multi pathologies; use advanced clinical reasoning skills.
  • To provide comprehensive assessment, treatment and evaluation of both inpatient and outpatients referred, including those with complex presentation in a timely manner. 
  • Formulate and deliver an individual hand therapy treatment programme based on a sound knowledge of evidence-based practice and treatment options using clinical assessment, reasoning skills and knowledge of treatment skills.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Degree or equivalent in Occupational Therapy or Physiotherapy
  • To be registered with the Health & Care Professions Council
Desirable criteria
  • To have qualification / study day attendance in relevant clinical areas

Experience

Essential criteria
  • To have extensive post graduate proven knowledge & demonstrable experience of a wide range of hand therapy assessments and interventions relevant to this clinical area
Desirable criteria
  • To have worked in out-patient hand therapy setting
