We have exciting opportunities for HCA’s to join Wildgoose  and Woodcock team. The Children and Women’s Health Directorate is an integrated Children’s Service incorporating both acute and community care; providing nursing care to babies, children and young people under the care of all specialities.

Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as ‘Priority’ and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification

Woodcock ward cares for younger children and Wildgoose ward mainly cares for adolescents, covering all specialities including Surgical, ENT, Plastics, orthopaedic and  mental health. We also care for all paediatric oncology patients  on Wildgoose regardless of age. HCA’s in this area would be involved in all aspects of the young person’s care and also one to one support for distressed patients.

You will need to have a positive and innovative approach to caring for children and young people. You must have excellent communication skills and the ability to work within a small team.

  1. Provide and deliver a high standard of nursing, care, recognising and meeting the specific needs of patients within an out patients department.
  2. Prioritise own tasks under the direction of registered nurse.
  3. To carry out clinical observations on patients, recognising, recording and reporting all changes in patients condition to senior staff.
  4. To support maintenance of fluid balance and dietary charts, recognising, recording and reporting all adverse findings to senior staff.
  5. Undertake clinical skills, once competent, as required by the department.
  6. Undertake the escort of patients to Theatre/other depts. under the direction of the registered nurse (when deemed competent).
  7. To support nutritional needs of patients by assisting with feeding and drinking, reporting on concerns about dietary intake to senior staff.
  8. An awareness of skin integrity over pressure points, recognising and reporting all adverse findings to senior staff.
  9. To recognise the importance of health education and teaching of patients and carers, and refer patients to senior staff
  10. Document and sign for all observations and care given with counter signature from a registered practitioner.
  11. To maintain his/her own professional development, attending courses/further training to enhance and optimise his/her role within the work area.
  12. To promote and safeguard the well-being of patients, their families and colleagues.
  13. To share responsibility in the care and maintenance of all equipment on the ward and stock control.
  14. To respect the confidential information, in line with Trust policy Data Protection Act, obtained in the course of work and not disclose this information.
  15. To be familiar with and adhere to Trust and Departmental policies and procedures mindful of responsibilities to self, colleagues and patients.
  16. Report untoward incidents, complaints, clinical emergencies to senior staff
  17. Be aware of the child protection process assist senior staff in the ongoing care of these children.
  18. Recording of patient activity and appointments using PIMS or other systems.
  19. To obtain notes as required, and record their movement.

Qualifications

  • GCSEs Grade A-D/3-9 in Maths and English or Functional Skills level 1 in Maths and English
  • NVQ level 2 in Health & Social Care or HCA UHP Level 2 or definitive evidence of working towards – 75% completed (or equivalent transferable qualification) OR
  • Demonstrable equivalent experience (NVQ Level 2 equivalent) as a Healthcare Assistant in a Band 2 clinical role and agree to undertake the HCA UHP L2 course. Willing to undertake a competency based assessment at interview.
  • Undertake and complete the Care Certificate training programme offered in-house

  • Ability to manoeuvre medium to heavy loads, which could be in excess of 25kg, in varying locations
