University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust is investing in the development of the Oncology services and is delighted to open the opportunity for a Clinical Oncologist to join the team. There are new opportunities across several cancer sites, which are negotiable depending on qualifications and experience. The choices to select sites would be from Breast and Gynaecology (including Ovary), Head and Neck, Lung, Colorectal and Urology. Other interests will also be strongly considered, and job can be shaped to individual’s experience and preferences.
Facilities include an on-site Chemotherapy Day unit, due to be moved and upgraded in 2024. Our Radiotherapy Suite is also undergoing a major upgrade for completion in 2025.

All Consultants manage their own site-specific workload and participate in our Acute Oncology Service on a 1 week in 12 rotation. Appropriate relocation support will be offered to suitable candidates based on their individual circumstances.

Main duties of the job
This is a full-time position comprising of 10 programmed activities (PA’s) based at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust NHS Trust. As per trust guidance a minimum of 1.5 PAs are dedicated to SPAs. You will be expected to participate in a minimum of 1 in 12 acute oncology service cover including weekend rounds and off site cover at night. On call duties are supported by an Oncology SpR. Appropriate dedicated specialist nursing and administrative and operational support will also be provided.
All members of the consultant team would be expected to undertake the following weekly routines:
· Two Inpatient ward rounds for your named patients
· Cancer site specific MDTs
· New Patient and Follow Up clinics.
· Supporting resident junior medical staff with training.
· AOS rounds (when undertaking on call weeks)
· Radiotherapy planning
· Chemotherapy prescribing
· Peer review

Patient facilities
Brent Ward provides 28-specialist Oncology inpatient beds and is supported by resident junior doctors and a team of specialist nurses. There is also an assessment area located on Brent Ward to facilitate direct admissions as well as elective procedures.
The Chemotherapy Day Case Unit currently has 24 treatment chairs and 3 side rooms and is in Fal Ward. Plans are in place to move this unit to a new ward, closer to our outpatient and radiotherapy suite.
The Oncology Research Department and a Macmillan Cancer Support Centre are also located within the Oncology Centre. The latter offering a complete package of supportive care including complementary therapies, counselling, and financial advice.
Our offices and outpatient clinics are collocated with our Radiotherapy and Radiation Physics Team in a dedicated part of the trust main building.
Staff facilities
There is a dedicated Staff Support Hub, which pulls together a range of resources and materials to help colleagues. This is designed to help find information quickly to support staff health and wellbeing. There are four areas within the Support Hub which each contain more detail and further links to advice and guidance on the different Psychological, Financial, Physical and Professional support available to all.
The successful candidate will be provided with dedicated office space, their own desk and allocated a medical secretary to support patient administration.

Education, qualifications & special training
Essential criteria
- MRCP(UK) or equivalent medical qualification
- Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
- Entry on GMC Specialist register via one of the following: a. Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) (the proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview) b. Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration c. European Community Rights
Desirable criteria
- Appropriate higher degree e.g. MD, PhD or equivalent
Skills and experience
Essential criteria
- Evidence of ability to take full responsibility for independent management of patients
Desirable criteria
- Experience in an additional tumour site
- Evidence of role in development of clinical service
Research & clinical audit
Essential criteria
- Able to conduct clinical audit with evidence of regular completion of audits, and demonstration of action on outcomes if appropriate
- Able to demonstrate keeps self-up to date with current research and best practice, through appropriate continuing professional development activities and own independent study and reflection.
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of being Principal Investigator of Clinical Trials
- Evidence of teaching qualification or learning.
