University Hospital Plymouth NHS Trust is looking for motivated individuals to join us as a level 2 Healthcare Science assistant Apprentice. The healthcare science assistant apprenticeship will be working in the Microbiology department; you will undertake a level 2 healthcare science assistant apprenticeship with an external provider whilst working alongside a range of different people, providing vital support services to our clinical teams. You might want to work in healthcare but unsure about providing direct patient care this could be the ideal job for you. The wage for this role will be £15,668 in line with annex 21 NHS terms and conditions

***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as ‘Priority’ and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***

As the complexity of our workload expands we are now seeking an enthusiastic Healthcare Science assistant apprentice with good interpersonal skills and a high degree of self-motivation to join the team in Microbiology.  As part of the team you will be working in a busy high throughput environment, sorting samples prior to testing, data entry and providing support to scientific staff.  Experience of laboratory work in a Pathology department would be an advantage, however all training will be given to the successful candidate.

We have a dedicated team based in the Trust who will support you in your apprenticeship programme. They will work very closely with you and your manager to provide a comprehensive development plan detailing your objectives and workplace goals. You will be employed on an 18 month fixed term contract on 37.5 hours per week; with time for personal study towards the apprenticeship framework. You will also be entitled to Annual Leave Holiday inclusive of public holidays.

  1. To support the specific technical and clerical duties in a section of the Department, working with the Admin Team, other ATOs and Biomedical Scientists as part of a team, to facilitate the smooth running of the service 
  1. To receive and/or prepare biological material collected from patients, including blood samples, for analysis whilst following a Standard Operating Procedure.
  2. To follow protocols for swift and accurate data entry, resulting and communication of results and to perform general office duties.See attached Job description for full details of duties and responsibilities
