Principal End User Compute Engineer

The Principal End User Compute Engineer is a key role within a small team responsible for the  provision of the Trusts client warranted environment. As Principal Engineer, the successful candidate will be work alongside the End User Compute Manager and wider EUC team to design, implement and support all aspects of the end user device estate and be involved in the shaping of future EUC strategy.

The Principal End User Compute Engineer works alongside the End User Compute Manager to provide technical expertise and leadership to the End User Compute team. They work closely with the End User Compute Manager to develop and implement EUC strategies and ensure that the End User Compute estate and associated infrastructure is secure, reliable, and performing optimally. They proactively identify and implement technical improvements, including automation and monitoring, to optimize the estate’s performance. In addition to providing technical guidance and support to the End User Compute Manager, they will help mentor the leading engineers in the End User Compute team, enhancing their skills and knowledge. The Principal End User Compute Engineer's expertise and proven knowledge are critical in troubleshooting complex endpoint technology issues and ensures that the End User Compute teams are up to date with industry best practices, and well equipped to deliver a service that enables high-quality patient care.

TECHNICAL SUPPORT 

  • Using highly developed specialist knowledge, underpinned by theory and experience, to provide expert technical guidance and support to the End User Compute team in identifying and resolving complex client endpoint technology issues. 

 

  • Collaborate with the End User Compute Manager to develop and implement strategies and policies that align with the organisation's goals and objectives. This includes dealing with highly complex, sensitive, and contentious information relating to the end user compute and software environments. 

 

  • Collaborate with the End User Compute Manager on a range of documentation; including but not limited to, business cases, infrastructure reviews, restructures, prioritisation work, and both internal and third-party audits.  

 

  • Identifying and testing technical improvements and opportunities for automation and monitoring to optimise the end user compute environment’s performance. 

 

  • Conducting regular audits and assessments of the end user compute management infrastructure and making recommendations for improvements. 

 

  • Producing metrics/evidence to support ongoing maintenance, hardware purchases, management system reviews and implementations, and improvement workstreams. 

 

  • Developing and implementing training and mentoring programs to enhance the skills and knowledge of the End User Compute Team. 

 

  • Evaluating and testing emerging technologies and recommending solutions to improve the end user compute environment and user experience. 

 

  • Providing technical leadership and mentoring to the End User Compute Team. 

 

  • Participating in the development of D&I Technical Services budgets and forecasts. 

 

  • Propose changes to, and redesign, end user compute and user experience related policies and procedures and align with industry best practices. 

 

  • Working with the End User Compute Manager to align workloads and avoid conflicting priorities. 

 

  • Ad hoc duties as directed by the End User Compute Manager and Head of Technical Services. 

 

  • Represent the interests of the End User Compute Team at meetings with stakeholders at all levels, when required and in the absence of the End User Compute Manager. 
  • To advise and assist the End User Compute Manager and Advanced End User Compute Engineers with D&Is Problem Management function. 
  • Required to liaise with our contracted suppliers to ensure that they are providing the required technical solutions.  
  • Where required, engage with vendors, and build working relationships with 3rd parties.  
  • Pro-actively review new and emerging technologies in relation to role. 
  • Sit on project boards for ongoing support of the end user compute environment where appropriate. 
  • Review OBS responses from vendors to ensure the requirements can be met and do not present a technical risk.  
  • May be required to be a member of an On Call rota. 

PLANNING SUPPORT  

  • Plan and organise a broad range of complex activities; formulates and adjusts plans and strategies.  
  • Plans, in conjunction with the End User Compute Manager, and the Principal Engineers when appropriate, projects which impact across the department & organisation, delivery of D&I services for own area; contributes to medium term D&I strategy. 
  • Ensure any end user compute technologies replacements meet the Trust’s warranted environment standard and have an appropriate lifespan. 
  • To input into Disaster Recovery planning and implementation involving out of hours work where necessary. 
  • Keep relevant documentation up to date and published in the correct format. 
  • Ensure process workflows and procedures are reviewed and updated where appropriate and identify where change and process improvement could be introduced. 
  • Execution and on-time delivery of pre-agreed projects. 
  • Identify areas of operational risk in the day-to-day running of the end user compute function. Reporting of risks to the End User Compute Manager. 

HUMAN RESOURCES 

  • Day-to-day people management of the team, including resource allocation, regular support, distribution of tasks and projects, attendance management, training, and development. 
  • Providing technical leadership and mentoring to the End User Compute team. 

 

  • Develop a personal development plan annually as part of the personal development review process and continuation of such through appropriate formal training as and when necessary. 
  • Use available resources (Intranet, internet, reading materials, conferences) to keep abreast of technical developments and look for opportunities to use these developments. 
  • Support Management to ensure the function is fully cross-trained, ensuring that the End User Compute team has always-adequate supervision and support. 
  • Escalate any performance issues, concerns, or problems which negatively impact the End User Compute team, to the End User Compute Manager. 
  • Ensures robust management of errors in spirit of being “Open, Honest and Transparent”. 

COMMUNICATIONS & WORKING RELATIONSHIPS 

  • Provide and receive highly complex, sensitive information. 
  • Maintain effective working relationships with key stakeholders. 
  • Communicates complex multi-stranded D&I and corporate issues to non-D&I managers; negotiates with external organisations and suppliers over service issues. 

Expected to communicate with a broad range of people, for example: 

  • D&I & non-D&I Managers 
  • Users - covers all Health Community staff and the general public. 
  • Various staff in other NHS Trusts and related organisations such as Universities, Councils, MoD etc. 
  • General Practitioners, Strategic Health Authority, and other health organisations in South & West Devon  
  • Commercial ICT server system Consultants, Suppliers, Installation and Maintenance Engineers. 

STRATEGY 

  • Implements D&I policies and procedures in own area. Propose policy or service changes, which may have an impact beyond own area. 
  • Proposes changes to and redesigns to local D&I policies and procedures, which have an impact in other areas. Input into relevant initiatives and strategies. 
  • Assist with business planning for capital budgets by suggesting appropriate products and technologies. 
  • Assist the D&I Chief Technology Officer, Head of Technical Services Manager, and End User Compute Manager in the development of the IT Infrastructure strategy for the Plymouth Health Community including the testing of new technologies.

  • A demonstrably experienced Digital technologist with demonstrable experience supporting and managing enterprise scale end user compute.
  • In-depth proven knowledge and demonstrable experience of enterprise computer system technologies including:
  • Microsoft Active Directory, including Group Policy.  Windows Enterprise Operating Systems. including Virtualisation.  Microsoft Office 365.  Microsoft Licencing.  Citrix and Windows Terminal Servers.  Cyber security and endpoint protection technologies
  • Expert proven knowledge and extensive demonstrable experience of specialist computer system technologies including:
  • Apple iOS and macOS operating systems

  • Demonstrable experience of project management/technical leadership.

Qualifications

  • Masters or Postgraduate degree or equivalent demonstrable experience in an equivalent role.
  • Microsoft Certified System Engineer (MCSE) or equivalent relevant demonstrable experience
  • Technical courses specifically in the management, configuration and support of Datacentre infrastructure, storage and network virtualisation
